Willis ISD trustees have approved a nearly $65 million maximum cost for the construction of a new middle school as part of the district’s $143 million bond package from 2022.

During a special meeting Thursday, trustees voted unanimously to approve the maximum cost of $64.7 million to the construction contract with Durotech, Inc.

“There are several schools around us that got built in neighboring districts, same size, same maximum capacity and we’re $20 million roughly less than those projects,” Willis ISD Secretary Chad Jones told those in attendance at the special meeting. “Everyone did a great job on that.”

Middle School No. 3 is expected to open for the 2025-26 school year, officials said.

The middle school will be a two-story campus, with a maximum capacity of 1,400 students, according to information provided by the district. It will also include a tennis court, a football field and track, science labs, two gyms and locker rooms, and areas for art, band, orchestra and choir.

Voters partially approved the district’s bond package in 2022, with Proposition A including the new middle school, a new elementary school, future land purchases, a fine arts addition to Lynn Lucas Middle School, upgrades to the playground equipment, and synthetic turf at Willis High School baseball and softball fields.

Propositions B and C did not pass and would have funded a new football stadium for the district, and a new natatorium where the swim teams would practice but the public could also utilize.

Elementary School No. 7 is slated to open for the 2026-27 school year and is expected to have a total capacity of 850 students.

As of Oct. 23, the district has a total enrollment of 8,975 students, said Communications Director Jamie Fails.Â
