A new coffee shop that recently expanded to Spring offers a place for drinks and snacks, and, the owners hope, a place to gather and form community bonds.

HeBrews Coffee, owned by Geoff and Marsha Wood, has two locations — the original location on FM 1488 and a new spot on Oak Ridge Drive in Spring. Their motto is “What would Jesus brew?”

Geoff Wood said the name of the coffee shop was intentional. He wanted to bring people of different faiths together, and to employ people of all faiths.

“I used to sit around in Bible study with a bunch of guys and talk about how one day there would be a HeBrews Coffee where music was playing and people could come together,” he said. “One guy said ‘Well, I don’t know how you’re going to do that.’ I just laughed it off.”

Marsha left her job in logistics and Geoff left his work in the nonprofit sector to launch their HeBrews Coffee.

They started out in 2018 with a mobile trailer selling coffee at churches, schools, businesses and events across north Houston.

Geoff had previous experience working at Starbucks.

“Starbucks does a great job of creating a place between work and home. We wanted to create a space between church and home,” he said. “Everyone is welcome here, but for the church folks there’s nothing to do Monday through Saturday (related to church.) This gives a faith-and-family option that may be different than other coffee shops.”

From their mobile trailer, Marsha said they realized there was a need for a place where people could come together over coffee.

“Nobody has a bad memory of drinking coffee,” Geoff said. “They may have bad memories of all sorts of other things, but not coffee.”

Their FM 1488 shop is at 33130 Magnolia Circle, Suite B, behind a new H-E-B grocery store. Theat spot opened in 2021 and they found people were hungry to get out and be together when this spot opened.

“That location was open for about two months when God gave us this crazy idea for doing coffee flights,” he said. They thought it sounded like a fun idea and it took off on social media.

The flight idea has now been extended to food items like the avocado toast flight serving three variations of the dish.

Coffee beans come from Purefi Coffee Roasters based in Old Town Spring. The current lunch menu features light summer selections like salads, sandwiches and pasta with pastries, egg dishes, scones and bagels for breakfast.

The Woodlands location opened on May 1 at 26403 Oak Ridge Drive. Specials now are themed for “Back to School” and then roll into fall coffee flights.

The building’s owner, Frank Gray, said he’d always dreamed of having a little coffee shop on the property, which was originally a home, then a real estate business. Geoff and Marsha kept the gardens that were on the grounds and added a children’s play area with outdoor seating.

“This is so far above and beyond what I had in mind,” he said.
