A Willis-area family has become a social media hit after posting photos of their “defund the HOA” skeleton-themed display.

Leah Sipe posted photos of her decorations to the “I Love Conroe” Facebook page Oct. 13.

As of Tuesday, the photos have garnered more than 150 supportive comments.

Last week Sipe put up skeletons in her yard, including a skeleton of a horse and several other animals.

Several skeletons are holding signs about common homeowners association violations, including visible trash cans and overgrown yard violations. The display also features a large skeleton holding a “defund the HOA” flag.

While Sipe said she didn’t have anything against homeowners associations, she said poking fun at her historically strict association just seemed funny for Halloween.

“The HOA here has always been strict,” Sipe said.

According to Homeowners’ Association Management Certificate Database for Texas, the associations are composed of property owners that make and enforce rules for the properties and residents.

In Montgomery County, the database shows there are 354 management certificates on file for homeowners’ associations.

Sipe, who declined to name the subdivision due to fear of retribution, said she and her husband moved to the home about a year ago. Since then, she has received numerous notices from the community association including a violation notice for her trash cans when she was in the hospital having her baby.

The family has not received any communication from homeowners association officials but Sipe said she expects to be asked to remove them.

“The decorations are really just a joke,” Sipe said. “But no doubt I’ll get a letter about it soon.”
