“Super Six”
Over the
past weekend, your MISD Fishing Team sent 23 Teams that earned the right to compete
in the Texas High School Bass Association Regional Championship on Lake LBJ. This
Tournament also included other qualifying Teams from the Houston, Bayou, and
Hill Country Divisions. On the line, berths to the prestigious THSBA State
Championship to be held on Lake Conroe May 31st & June 1st.
By all accounts,
the fishing was good, with MISD catching more 5 fish limits than you can shake
a stick at. Unfortunately, the majority
of the limits weighed in were in the 10-to-11-pound range, which were below the
cut line of being in the top 30% out of 179 Teams, which was 12.20 pounds being
the last team in above the cut in 54th place.
Leading the
way for MISD was the Team of Waylon Hasara and Chase Benton who brought in a 5
fish limit of 16.87 pounds, claiming 10th place. The Team said that
“we caught our fish on both moving and slow-moving soft plastics.” Their biggest bass which tipped the scales at
6.27 pounds, was caught by Chase. She was caught on a swim bait rigged on light
wire underspin. Waylon was able to help the cause as well, Dead Sticking a
Texas Rigged Senko with a light pegged weight. Waylon went onto say that “I
think the slow presentation or dead sticking the bait was key to me being able
to catch so many keepers, and helping my Team earn a 10th place
finish.”
The next
Team that did well for MISD was the solo team of Hunter Laskoskie, which had an
impressive 5 fish limit that weighed in at 14.82 pounds. Hunter’s Captain is
his Dad Clint Laskoskie, and he shared that “Hunter caught all of his fish
during the shad spawn around shallow grass.”
He went on to say that “Hunter used Frogs and swim jigs to fill out his
limit fairly quickly, and had a late cull on a wacky rigged senko just before
they had to come in.”
Our 3rd
highest placing Team was Morgan Scott & Trevor Mahoney, where Morgan fished
solo, as Trevor had a prior commitment that kept him from participating. However,
Morgan picked up the slack, and caught 4 fish that weighed exactly 13 pounds,
easily earning their Team a spot in the State Championship. All combined, these
top 3 Teams from MISD had a combined weight of 44.69, which landed the MISD in
3rd place finish out of 68 programs in the Region.
Others that
will be representing MISD at the State Championship on May 31st
& June 1st are Talen Tegtmeier and Jackson Petty with 12.95
pounds. Also, Garrett Springer and Matt Francis with 12.50 pounds, and our last
qualifying team being Josiah and Justin Dancer with 12.44 pounds.
Together, we
will call this collection of Anglers our “Super Six,” as these six Teams will
be representing all of Montgomery at the State Championship here on Lake Conroe.
A Lake that they just might be familiar with!
