Trixie’s WOW (Women of Waterford) Book Club met last week for fun, food, fellowship and even a little discussion of our book for the month, “The Henna Artist” the first book in a trilogy written by Alka Joshi.  This novel centers around seventeen year old Lakshimi who escapes from an arranged and abusive marriage and travels to the vibrant pink city of Jaipur in the 1950s.  There she becomes the henna artist-and confidante-most in demand by the wealthy women of the upper class. Known for her original designs and sage advice, Lakshimi must tread carefully to avoid the jealous gossips who could ruin her reputation and her livelihood.

Joining WOWs Karen Dwyer and Marie Underdown were Betsy Himmel, Susan Greer and Terry Pool. Of course, no book club meeting would be complete if we did not share what was going on in our lives.  I shared the upcoming Pooches & Patriots Luncheon/Fashion Show, a fundraiser for SPCA PETS SNAP of Montgomery County (a 501c3, all volunteer, animal rescue organization with a no-kill policy for adoptable pets) that will take place at April Sound’s Lakeside Room on October 7.

Terry, with Keller Williams Realty (terry.pool@kw.com) shared her philosophy on life which comes from “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom”, a self help book by author Don Miguel Ruiz.  This book outlines a code of conduct based on ancient Toltec wisdom-advocating freedom from self-limiting beliefs which bring suffering and limitation to one’s life.  The central point is that a person’s life is determined by agreements they have made with themselves, others, God and society as a whole.  The book is broken up into an exploration of the four agreements: “Be impeccable with your word”, “Do not take anything personally”, “Do not make assumptions”, and “Always do your best”.  We all agreed that if we could follow these agreements, our lives would certainly be better and happier!

Our book for October is “West with Giraffes” by Lynda Rutledge.  This selection is an emotional and rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America.

If any gal out there is interested in a casual, friendly book club, we would love to have you!  We meet every fourth Monday night at 6 pm at my home in Waterford Estates.  Just shoot me an email or, if you live in Waterford Estates, just come on down!
