Celebrating a big birthday of a friend started at Walden’s Lakeside Dining last Friday. I must compliment the staff and also welcome the new Food and Beverage Manager Jesse Cole. The food was delicious and our server Miguel Abraham did an outstanding job. My guest requested an Irish Coffee at the end of the meal and Miguel did a tableside presentation that was truly impressive.

There was a lovely couple dining next to our table, John Hale and his lovely wife kindly brought to our attention that we were missing out on an outstanding view of the rising Harvest Moon. John did not underestimate that view. I mentioned I thought I knew, but was not certain, how the moon became labeled “Harvest Moon”. I was delighted that John shared with me what his mother, Lotus, had shared with him. It was a delightful story.

Here is the scoop from the Old Farmer’s Almanac: “For several evenings, the moonrise comes soon after sunset. This results in an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening, which was a traditional aid to farmers and crews harvesting their summer-grown crops. Hence, it’s called the “Harvest” Moon! Additionally, the Harvest Moon rises at sunset and then will rise very near sunset for several nights in a row because the difference is at a yearly minimum. It may almost seem as if there are full Moons multiple nights in a row!”

There was so much going on last month that I missed congratulating the September Aces.  The WLGA winner was Carolyn Ginandt with a 68 net. The WLGA-9 winners were Barbara Shepherd with a gross 57 and Erin Williams with a net 38. The Niners followed their golf with a fun time at the lakeside home of Kerry & Randy Moravec for the Niners monthly luncheon. Kerry and her co-host Connie Gilmore welcomed twenty Niners for some good food, interesting conversations and maybe a glass or two of wine.
