After almost a year’s absence, it’s nice to say hello once again. Your columnist Karla Seidule asked if I would like to submit this week’s Walden article. Of course, the answer was “Well, yes!”
The Walden course was a busy place this past week as the lady golfers gathered for the annual Spirit of America Invitational Golf Tournament. The tournament recognizes the anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy and honors our first responders. The charity event provides needed funds and items for the Montgomery Women’s Center. In the past three years the tournament has raised over $40,000 for the cause through a silent auction and raffle. Over twenty Houston area golf clubs donated rounds of golf for the raffle along with numerous area merchants and club members.
Many thanks go to Tournament Chairpersons Marsue Ferguson and Karen Cutrer for their outstanding leadership along with the dedication of an awesome Tournament Committee. As the saying goes, many hands make light work. Many thanks to the more than 30 WLGA Committee members, along with ten or so MGA members.
The tournament traditionally kicks off with the display of the American flag, singing of the national anthem and prayer. Holding the flag this year was Mrs. Kathy Cain, wife of honoree Dan Cain. Kathy represented all the spouses who remained at home “keeping the home fires burning” while their partners were away in service to the United States. Serving as a U.S. Marine, Dan Cain was wounded in action during the Viet Nam War. He served on numerous Navy vessels, was an instructor at the Miramar “Top Gun” Naval Station and had a cameo appearance in the 1986 movie “Top Gun”. During his career he was awarded 18 individual and unit citations including a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal. Kym Harris led the gathering in the singing of the National Anthem followed by a prayer.
The two-day tournament wound up with the traditional Yacht Club luncheon and recognition of the flight winners. Again, too many to name here. Playing the Walden course is always a treat and, hopefully, I will be able to return next year for this most enjoyable golf experience. Many thanks to my hosts, Carolyn and Robert Ginandt, for providing the lovely lodging, wonderful food and fantastic sunrise mornings.
On a personal note, if you remember my granddaughter Mackenzie, she still defies all medical expectations and is doing very well. She is a happy, energetic eight-year-old and is in third grade now. Her condition, D.I.P.G., still has no cure but hope, love and prayers has done wonders. The hubby and I are enjoying life in the New Mexio mountains but Walden holds a very special place in our lives.
