I was delighted to see a familiar face at Walden on Lake Conroe’s Café on the Green. Larry Finke was there and confirmed that he is back, on an interim basis, to work on the ground conditions of our golf course. Larry retired in 2018 after 40 years as Superintendent of the course. He is back under what I will term as “difficult weather-related conditions”. We are all thankful he’s back, even if it is on an interim basis!

The third Wednesday of each month is the regular schedule for Ace competition for the WLGA and WLGA-9. It was no exception this past Wednesday.  Congrats go to WLGA player Paula Stetson who won with a net score of 71.  The WLGA-9 winners – Sharon Richardson with a gross score of 53 and Lisa Kintigh with a net score of 34.

Susan Holt hosted, with co-host Patsy Chevrette, a well-attended Niner luncheon at Susan and Dave Holt’s lovely 9th hole golf course home. Great food, lively conversations and a fine time was had by all. We kick-off the gathering with our General Meeting “stuff” lead by our President Kerry Moravec. A big take-away from the meeting dealt with the importance of being aware of heat related health issues brought on during these record-breaking, excessive heat advisories. Kerry shared the following suggestions:

Let’s take care of ourselves. We still have more hot days ahead of us and it’s critical that we all take steps to stay safe and healthy:
• Hydrate with Water before, during, and after playing (not coke, tea, coffee)

• Wear sunscreen

• Cover your head

• Use a fan

• Bring a wet washcloth that’s been frozen

• Play as early in the day as possible

• Don’t play if you aren’t feeling “100%”

And from the Mayo Clinic website:  Should you think anyone is having signs of heat related symptoms take immediate action to cool the overheated person while waiting for emergency treatment: Get the person into shade or indoors, remove excess clothing, cool the person with whatever means available — put them in a cool tub of water or a cool shower, spray with a garden hose, sponge with cool water, fan while misting with cool water, or place ice packs or cold, wet towels on the person’s head, neck, armpits and groin.

Please stay safe and cool!
