Saturday, August 26 starting at 1:00pm, the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County will host their Intimate Gatherings Series spotlighting Steve Davis, a professor of History at Lone Star College Kingwood. Steve will share stories of Elvis Presley when he performed in Conroe at Tiger Stadium August 24, 1955 “Elvis and the Louisiana Hayride”. Mary McCoy will accompany Steve for this special appearance at the Heritage Museum.
The Montgomery County Arts Alliance is hoping to raise funds for a bust of Mary and pedestal installed in Founder’s Plaza next to the Owen Theatre in downtown Conroe. The total is $20,000 and although some money has been raised, more is needed. Mary McCoy holds the Guinness World Record title for the longest career as a female radio presenter; 72 years on air in Conroe! There are currently statues of several artists from the Conroe area- Dave Parsons, 2011 Texas Poet Laureate, Annette Gordon-Reed, a CHS alumni and Pulitzer Prize awardee, and one for the Young Texas Artists Music Competition held in March. Donations can be made online at www.greaterconroeartsalliance.com/donate. Those who donate $1000 and above will have their name on the plaque.
