The Toys For Tots campaign in Bentwater got a boost this year when North Shore Republican Women joined the effort as a group. Of course, many of its members have supported Ts4Ts for years, either individually or through the Bentwater Ladies Organization. But, this year, thanks to the urging of current president, Leigh Billingsley, and the urgency of Ann Kate to get the word out only a few days prior to their December luncheon, the donation boxes were overflowing this past week. Santa salutes NSRW.
Speaking of Santa, some of you might recall that, a couple of years ago, this article reported that Santa Claus’ brother lives amongst us here in Bentwater. It’s true, but you probably recognize him best by his alias, Joe Chitty. You know, that guy with the full, white beard. Well, at that time, Joe’s neighbor had hinted to her grandson that Joe might actually be Santa’s brother. Better yet, since she knew him, she was sure she could arrange for the grandson to meet him. So, the youngster and his family were invited to visit and, along with Joe’s always-ready-for-a-party bride, Jan, they put on quite a production. The youngster was convinced and, two years later, is still sure he has an inside track to “the man” who delivers the goods.
To help get the rest of you in the spirit of Christmas and the promise of the New Year that follows, the BLO’s Holiday Home Tour is happening this week. December 10th & 11th to be exact. Forgot to get your tickets!? Don’t panic. You can still buy tickets for $30 each at the door of any of the homes on tour. For your convenience, those addresses (in no particular order) are 155 Pine Branch Drive, home of Alan and Kristen Martin; 86 Creekwood Drive, home of Mike and Jennifer Hoiden; 304 West Pines, home of Ace and Cathy Alexander; and 111 Benthaven Court, home of Roger and Julie Rodriguez. And, since the homes are strategically situated in the corners of Bentwater, you’ll be able to enjoy your other neighbors’ creative and impressive holiday decorations as you travel from one to another throughout your small town.
In a recent article I was trying to be clever and made a tongue-in-cheek reference about Dear Abby, Norma Bombeck and Walter Cronkite. Well, duh. As best I can tell, Norma Bombeck doesn’t exist. Never did. But I didn’t realize my error until my friend, Nancy Kuper, whispered in my ear that Erma Bombeck might be disappointed to learn that I didn’t know her name. Of course, Erma’s been gone for nearly thirty years now, so she probably wouldn’t be aware of my faux pas. But I’m a bit embarrassed because Erma was a big influence on me in my younger years. She had a real gift for wrapping humor around the most mundane topics to create a story that was often hilarious and always entertaining. As for the faux pas, Nancy was sweet to suggest that it was likely due to one of those newfangled Ai auto-correct type of thingamajigs. Nope. It was a good old fashioned brain blip. Human error. Mine. And can you believe it? That’s at least two for me this year. Thankfully, the new year is close and I can start over.
