Did you ever hear “Small Town” by John Mellencamp? Cool song. And the rhythm is pretty catchy, too. Can’t quite place it? Just search it on your phone and take a minute to listen to some of his lyrics. I’m guessing they’ll resonate. After all, we all live in a small town. Small town culture. Small town relationships. Small town friends and neighbors. Hopefully, over the years, you’ve found this article to sometimes be sorta like Dear Abby and Norma Bombeck meet Walter Cronkite (some of you will get that), but the actual purpose is to keep you in the loop on Bentwater people and all the great things they do here in our small town. Of course, it’s best if I can tell you about things that will be happening rather than stuff that has already happened but, sometimes, the submission deadlines and calendar just don’t mesh very well, so it can make it tough to be forward looking. Take today’s subject, for example, which was prompted by the events of last night’s club lighting experience. If you were among the throngs roaming around after dark and soaking up the small-town atmosphere on display, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
As I often point out, in Bentwater you can be as involved or as anonymous as you choose to be. You’re welcomed to be part of the clubs and groups, but you won’t be coerced into any of them. That means, unless it’s your preference to remain anonymous forever, it’s up to you to reach out. Do you know your neighbors? Not just to smile and say “hey” as you walk past each other now and then, but do you really know them? Do they know you? After all, like any small town (according to the official handbook on Americana), good neighbors sometimes know more about their neighbors than their neighbors know about themselves. Where did they grow up? Where did they move from? How long have they lived in Bentwater? What do they enjoy doing in their spare time? What was life before Bentwater? Do they belong to any clubs? What are their passions? Their phobias? Should you and they become part of one another’s BFF inner circle? Well? What are you waiting for? You don’t have to go knocking on doors. Just go where they are. And there will be a bunch of ‘em at Bentwater’s annual Holiday in the Park in the Meadows this afternoon from noon to 4. There’ll also be dozens of vendors presenting gift ideas for every age and budget and taste. Speaking of taste, food and beverage trucks will be on site, too. Even Santa Claus will be there. Oh yeah, and I’ll be right next to him with some of my cohorts and a couple of donation boxes, gratefully accepting your generous gifts to Toys For Tots. Yep. “It’s A Wonderful Life” here in our small town. Hope to see you there.
