Happy soon-to-be Thanksgiving, Bentwater and, boy, do we have lots to be thankful for here in our little corner of the world.  One way I choose to give thanks is to give back.  How?  Glad you asked.  In a word, turkeys.  Don’t you just love fried turkey? Me, too. But, there’s a conundrum.  Seems it takes $50 of peanut oil to fry one $30 turkey, and that math just doesn’t work.  Only one way to fix that as far as I could tell. Yep.  Fry ‘em in bunches!  So, since I’m definitely frying a bird for Casa de Sellers, I’ll be happy to fry yours, too.  Here’s the scoop.

On Thanksgiving Day, I’ll be in my driveway with my peanut oil bubbling and ready for the first turkey to get dunked sometime around 10 AM.  It takes precisely (not approximately, but precisely) 50 minutes to fry a 15-pound bird which means I’m able to cook one an hour on average.  The last one goes in the pool around 4 PM which means the oil gods could produce seven, maybe eight, birds before the sun went down.  Then it occurred to me that I could get some time back and reduce the 8 hours to 4 hours by just adding another cooker.  Best laid plans and such, over the years, this tradition (which I enjoy a lot by the way) has become increasingly popular to the point that, instead of fewer hours, I gained more turkeys.  So, now I’m doing a dozen or more.  Even as I write this, word of mouth and turkey lovers from past years have the schedule about 50% booked.  In other words, if you’re thinking “maybe” you will, you “may be” too late if you dally.  It’s first-come, first-served so calling is the smartest way to be sure you claim a spot.  My cell is (936) 788-3220.  Ready, set, go.

If you’re looking for ways to be thankful amongst friends, there are a couple of events coming up this week you’ll enjoy.  The first is on the 19th when the monthly Mix ‘n’ Mingle will be happening in the Crescent Grill from 4-7.  The theme this month is honoring our veterans.  So, whether you’re a veteran yourself or just want to say “thanks” to one (or twenty), come on down.  Then later in the week, on Friday the 22nd to be exact, is the final Park In The Meadows concert of the year.  Folks will start gathering around 5 and music (by Kat Fyfe) kicks off at 6. Food, drink, music and friends, all orchestrated by Jada England and made possible courtesy of sponsorship by Beverly and Blair Smith.  So, stop by and, when you do, be sure to tell them all “thanks!”

Ronda McCarthy tells me there’s yet another reason for celebration.  Seems one of Bentwater’s three teams has just defeated Styron to win the fall season of the North Houston Interclub Pickleball League which ended Nov 13.  Bentwater’s Shakers and Bakers outpaced nine other teams to earn first place, retaining the championship from the spring in the NHIPL.  Bentwater’s other two teams, Bentwater Real Dills and Bentwater Dinking Divas, join the Bentwater champs and seven other teams, High Meadow Ranch, The Woodlands (2 teams), April Sound (2 teams), Elkins Lake, and Walden to round out the league.  Not surprisingly, as America’s fastest growing sport, pickleball continues to grow and thrive in Bentwater.  Interested in learning more?  Just pop into the sports club and they’ll direct you to the source.  Meanwhile, don’t forget Toys For Tots.  You might just change a life.  Be thankful that you can.
