By now, many of you probably know the names of the citizens who are your newly-elected members of the Montgomery County Appraisal District Board, the folks who’ll be considering your upcoming property tax protests. You might also know who, as your elected Board members of the Montgomery Independent School District, will be responsible for fueling the brains of your kids and/or grandkids for a while.
So, when you see them, regardless so whether you voted for them, give ‘em a sincere “thank you” for their willingness to serve. What you don’t yet know is who will be your next sheriff of Montgomery County. Yep, there’s one more ballot coming your way and, among other things, it’ll settle the runoff between incumbent, Rand Henderson, and challenger, Wesley Doolittle. And it still needs your attention. If you’re one of those who tends to vote for those candidates whose name you hear or see the most, that strategy probably won’t be too much help this time because you’ve been seeing both their signs, no matter which way you turn, for months.
But don’t let that lull you to sleep because, even if you’ve already made your decision, you aren’t done just yet. You still have to get to the polls on May 28 (or during early voting a few days prior) so that decision of yours will become more than just your opinion. It’ll actually matter. For those of you who might still be undecided or just plain don’t know much about either of the candidates other than the colors of their signs, here’s a crash course opportunity for you to consider.
The Men Of Bentwater will be having their monthly luncheon coming up at the Yacht Club on May 15th (I’m telling you now because, if you decide to participate, you’ll need to have made your reservation by the 7th which is only a couple of days away). What do a bunch of MOBsters have to do with the Sherrif’s race? Glad you asked. This month’s MOB’s guest speaker will be Montgomery County District Attorney, Brett Ligon. Stop right here for just a second and connect the dots. Who else do you suppose might know more about how well, or not, the criminal justice system is being managed in Montgomery County other than your very own County DA?
Now don’t show up expecting him to tell you who he thinks might best deserve your vote. That would be too easy. But perhaps he can help you make a more informed choice of your own by offering some anecdotal information to help you consider what’s broken and needs to be fixed versus what’s working the way it’s supposed to and needs to be continued. After all, it’s your vote. Shouldn’t it be your decision?
