Whether you’ve been paying close attention (or no attention at all), you could easily find yourself very confused about the upcoming elections.  Yep, plural. More than one.  And the first one will have some choices on the ballot you’ve never dealt with before because the choices never existed before.  Would it get your attention to learn that how (or whether) you vote could profoundly affect on your property taxes?  How’s that you ask?  Well, back in November of last year you (at least most of you) voted “yes” on Proposition 4 which said that the Boards of any appraisal district with a population of 75,000 or more (that’s you) must now include three Directors who are elected by the residents (that’s also you).

As of this writing, there are five (5) candidates vying for those three Board positions on the Montgomery County Appraisal District and, for anyone who might be curious, they are Freddie Brooks, Gary Beck, Pete Palmer, Luis Pedraza and Webb Melder.  If you don’t already know them or know anything about their resumes, you’ll have to do your own homework to find out more about them because I’m obliged to remain neutral.  So, you might want to jump on Facebook or Google or talk to your neighbors, because early voting starts tomorrow with in-person voting coming up on May 4th.  Since the full ballot will include pages of MUD board races (not yours) and myriad mayors and other city officials (also not yours), you won’t have a lot of other decisions to wrestle over.

But at least one race deserving your attention will be for the Montgomery County School Board, Position 4 (that’s you, again).  The two candidates are Paul Cameron and Trey Kirby.  Now, you might think that the runoff for sheriff would be on this ballot, too.  But, noooo.  That would be much too convenient, so that choice won’t be available for you to make until May 28 (with early voting the week prior).  I know.  The schedule can make it easy to lose your enthusiasm about voting altogether.  But apathy is not your friend so don’t let it win.  Go vote.  Both elections.
