Folks can’t always articulate exactly why or what they’re celebrating, but some “special” days just seem to be more fun than others, don’t you agree? Take for example, Cinco de Mayo which is coming soon and we’ll talk more about that then.  Or St. Patrick’s Day.  Hey, that’s today, so we’ll talk about it right now.  There’s no shortage of folklore and legend about the who, what. why and when of St. Patrick and I don’t have enough space to try to expound on them all.  But some swear that the tradition of St. Patrick’s Day in America was an outgrowth of the migration to America as the Irish fled the devastation of the great potato famine.

But that famine didn’t begin until 1845.  Meanwhile, records show at least one St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on March 17, 1601 in the Spanish colony of what is now St. Augustine, Florida.  Hmmm.  America hadn’t even yet been founded. I guess if you’re looking for a reason to party, one excuse is as good as the next. So, maybe have a green beer and ponder that for a bit, and let me know what you decide. Meanwhile, today is also the last day of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and there just might be some folks wanting to celebrate having survived those three weeks of “fun” without too much damage.  But truth is, it still ain’t over. At least, not in Bentwater.  No sirree. Seems that there’s a “rodeo” theme to this month’s Mix ‘n’ Mingle and, as always, that happens on the third Tuesday of every month in the Crescent Grill of the Country Club.  Translation.  It’s this coming Tuesday, the 19th from 4-7.

Now you don’t have to bring your saddle (nor should you, even if it might seem like a great idea after a few tumblers of green beer), but you might want to dust off your 10-gallon hats (or at least the 2-gallon version), polish your boots and try to fit in.  Yippee ki yo, ki yay (yeah, there’s a story that goes with that, too, but I’ll spare you, at least for the time being). The month of March in Bentwater is not without its “special” days.  From leprechauns to cowperson hats (pretty sure that’s not even a word but I’m not really up to speed on all the pronoun confusion and didn’t want to risk offending anyone by a thoughtless reference to cowboys or cowgirls) to bunny ears (the Easter kind, not the other kind).  Yep, March finds us livin’ the dream here in Bentwater.  Even Mother Nature’s celebrating with us.  Yippee ki…oh, never mind.
