As you read this, your anxiety is probably building in anticipation of the Taylor Swift show that’ll be taking place later today.  It should be great fun to watch even though you should expect that it’ll be continuously interrupted by some annoying football game.  Guess that’s the price we pay these days for “free” entertainment.   But if you’ll just be sure to have ample libation and munchies on hand, you’ll be able to manage your way through it.  And, most importantly, may your team win.

This is the grand finale for the football season, but there is another competition right around the corner.  The upcoming primary election is happening March 5th with early voting beginning on February 20th and, unlike football, what you do (or don’t do) will determine the winners of this contest.  The ballot will be lengthy as this election cycle includes national, state and local candidates.  A quick online search will show you who’s running for which office and, if you search deeply enough, what they stand for.  While every position and decision is important, you might consider that your choices of those candidates running for local offices could have the greatest impact on your future quality of life here in our little corner of the world.  And, you already know that our current quality of life in Montgomery County is pretty special, worth protecting.  But the only way to keep it that way is to actively participate in the process.

That means you.  Me.  All of us.  Simply voting is the only requirement, but being an informed voter is even better.  In Bentwater, there’s more than ample opportunity to be involved and educated since any of the group luncheons is likely to have multiple of your public servants attending.  Yep, you can meet and talk with candidates one-on-one, but those aren’t the only opportunities. Just this past week my bride and I found ourselves to be amongst perhaps sixty other Bentwater residents who at the home of Gail and Doug McKinnon where we had a couple of hours to visit that with one particular incumbent.  This article isn’t allowed to mention a candidate’s name without mentioning all the names but, candidly, the point attempting to be made here is more about the event than any particular candidate.

Have you ever considered hosting your own meet-and-greet event?  Whether it’s for six close friends or sixty acquaintances, just pick the candidate you’d like to have as your guest and make a phone call to their office.  Their receptivity may shock you.  Yes, hosting it might seem a hassle, but it can be the difference maker.  Of course, not hosting it could be, too.   Just a thought.
