Your Christmas decorations should be all taken down by now (even if they’re not yet boxed up), and I’m guessing some of you (not to be confused with those of us who reside at Casa de Sellers) may even have them carefully stowed away, patiently waiting for next year. And you know all too well that next year will be here before you can blink.
Yep, time flies whether you’re having fun or not, but that’s a topic for another time. This week’s topic is “purpose.” Admit it, with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season behind you, you’re might just be experiencing some form of withdrawal. Perhaps feeling a little bored? Maybe looking for a sense of purpose? Then pay attention, because here’s a purpose that’s possibly looking for you. If you’re up for it. At the Men of Bentwater luncheon this past week, there was a presentation from Meals on Wheels of Montgomery County. The speaker was the organization’s Community Development Director, Carrie Watkins. You probably know her folks (or would at least recognize them when you see them), because they’re Bentwater’s own Tom and Lynn Watkins.
That has nothing to do with the subject but I feel full disclosure matters. Now back to the subject itself, Meals on Wheels. If you’re like me, you’ve known the name forever. Personally, I’m more than a little embarrassed to confess that, prior to the luncheon, I was admittedly ignorant of the scope of services they provide and size of the audience they serve. If you thought they deliver some meals to the needy, you’d be right. But the needs don’t stop at the supper table. Through the efforts of Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers, nearly 1,000 homebound seniors in Montgomery County are able to remain in their homes where they want to be, where they’re comfortable, while avoiding some of the high costs of nursing home care and reducing a bit of stress from others’ giving care.
So, that hot, nutritious meal (which, by the way, the organization’s chef prepares from scratch in their own kitchen facilities) comes with a safety check, always a friendly smile from a volunteer and even transportation for critical appointments and errands when needed. Yeah, there’s a lot going on and, now that you know a little more about what is provided, you can better understand that it takes a legion of volunteers to properly serve this senior community. Fortunately, there are hundreds of volunteers, including many of you right here in Bentwater, but there can never be too many. Sound interesting? Maybe your purpose?
