One of the most satisfying aspects of living in Bentwater is that you’re always invited to participate in everything but not pressured to participate in anything. It’s completely up to you how involved or anonymous as you choose to be. Of course, you generally need to know something is going on before you can decide whether you might be interested in participating, and that’s exactly the point of this week’s article. Have you ever heard of “Men In Leadership?” It’s a book written by Bob Briner and it’s widely available. Scripturally based, it’s a 90-day devotional. Anyone can buy a copy and read it whenever and wherever they wish, totally at their own pace and leisure. Or, they can choose to read it more slowly and intentionally in the company of others. Channeling Bill Engvall, “Here’s Your Sign.”
For several years, a small but dedicated group have been regularly gathering in the men’s locker room of the country club and using that book as a guide to do a bit of reflection and discussion and brotherly bonding for an hour or so. It happens every other Friday at the crack of dawn (7 AM), and you’re always welcome to join in if you choose. But just don’t take my word for it. Talk to others. I won’t dare try to list them all for fear of overlooking someone, but some Bentwater names you might recognize include Randy Jones, Russell Price, Paul Scannell and Max Martin. Others who join us when their schedules and health allow include Walt Bennett, Bill Weimer, Paul Gugenheim, Don Heathcott, Tom Landry, and John Wathen to mention a few.
Jim “the jet” Jones even joins us telephonically all the way from North Carolina. If none of these names is familiar to you, it doesn’t matter because organizing all this is Mike Myers and he never met a stranger. You probably don’t recognize that name either because he doesn’t live in Bentwater, though he may as well because he spends a lot of time here and it would be worth your time to get to know him. Mike’s outreach began decades ago with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and, these days, he’s driving down from Bryan/College Station for each of our gatherings. The next get-together is this coming Friday the 26th and the door will be open if you’d care to poke your head in. The format isn’t very complicated. The group reads a few lines from the book and then pauses to discuss how that message might or could or should resonate in our own lives. The group have now cycled through that book several times, but it never gets old because the mix of attendees and interpretation and conversation change with each reading. Check it out for yourself. You can thank me later.
