This time of year comes with a non-stop schedule of socializing and eating and drinking and being merry.  Lots of events for reminiscing with old friends and making new ones, for sharing good memories and being grateful.  And with Christmas and New Year’s still to come, you may feel like your celebration cup is way more than half full.  Even so, I’d like you to consider at least one more.

While this isn’t normally a place for eulogies, it is most definitely a place for sharing good thoughts.  And it’s with that in spirit that I’ll share that Bob “Doc” Meadors earned his angel wings a few days ago.  His bride, LaVera, is inviting you to join her and family and many, many friends next Saturday for an open house celebration of Bob’s life.  For those who might read these articles from time to time, you know a common theme is to shine a light on Bentwater residents who have a demonstrated passion for giving back, for paying it forward.  That pretty much describes Doc, a man of many causes and the one perhaps best known to those of us here in Bentwater was Operation Helmet which sent tens of thousands of helmet pad upgrade kits that provide comfort as well as protection for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen.

I’m guessing there’ll be lots of stories about the how and when and why of Operation Helmet as well as some of Doc’s other exploits at the open house.  It’ll take place at the Meaders’ home on December 23rd which, not coincidentally, would have been Bob and LaVera’s 40th wedding anniversary.  Yet another reason for a celebratory toast.  LaVera tells me the wine will start flowing around 3 o’clock and the toasts will continue until the libation runs out.  Cheers, Doc.

As you read this, the elves are scurrying with the last-minute preparations for Santa to deliver Toys For Tots and, thanks to you, there is an abundance to be delivered this year.  Bentwater continues to be a major supporter of this annual program in large part due to the efforts of the BLO, the MOB and the BLGA as well as contributions from individuals, way too many to try to acknowledge personally in this space.  Even so, I’d like to make an exception and specifically thank Jim & Jody Hostetler and Craig & Christina Epperson for their awesome generosity yet again.  Collectively, Bentwater is making Christmas much merrier for hundreds of local families.  And, if only one child is touched by this experience to grow up also giving back, paying it forward, mission accomplished.
