If you’re one of those who’ve stocked up and are hoarding goodies because you think that whole “trick or treat” thing will take place on Tuesday.
You know. Halloween? Sorry. You just missed the bus. It’s true. While you were maybe candy shopping, Bentwater’s Trunk or Treat soiree at the Community Park took place on Saturday. Yesterday. So, you may have to eat all that candy yourself because no one will likely be knocking on your door come Halloween night. Now there are some who’ll argue that traditions aren’t meant to be broken. Trick or Treat after dark on Halloween is a tradition. And, heaven knows, I’m the world’s biggest fan of tradition. But when you think back to the days when munchkins could (and would) take candy from total strangers without so much as a thought that it might be anything but candy, you have to ask yourself, what were we thinking? Sure, that was a kinder, gentler time when civility and safety were assumed if not outright taken for granted. But my, how times have changed. That was then, and this is now. Fortunately, our now means living in a place that copes with those changing times in the most positive of ways, and Trunk or Treat is yet another of the great Bentwater traditions that encourages residents to celebrate as a community. And it’s that very notion of community that motivated most of us to move here. After all, there are plenty of nice homes on nice streets in nice areas all over Texas. But community? That takes effort. It also takes participation. Many thanks to the volunteers from the POA, Bentwater Life and the Bentwater Civic Association who collaborated to pull this one together. And a special thanks to all who decorated their trunks (and/or golf carts) with the Halloween theme to the delight of youngsters of all ages. As for Saturday rather than Tuesday? Well, it wasn’t a school night so the switch was a thoughtful strategy. Smart, too. Maybe bordering on clairvoyant. Have you looked at Tuesday’s forecast? Brrrrrr.
We love our Bentwater community, but our bigger community also needs some love. Have you voted yet? No? Hmmmm. Early voting will still be open through next Friday the 3rd and you’re being tasked with determining the fate of 14 state propositions which absolutely takes more effort than just voting for those candidates with the more familiar names. But these propositions will have a much greater and longer impact on our lives. The following link https://www.youtube.com/@LWVTexas shows brief (2-minute) videos outlining the pros and cons of each. So, no excuses. Get educated. And go vote.
