We’ll soon have the answer to this age-old question. Do well-planned, well-attended, extravagant outdoor events (in particular, golf tournaments and fundraisers) always act as magnets for hurricanes? I suppose we’ll find out soon enough because the Bentwater Ladies Golf Association just announced their upcoming “Rumble in the Jungle” annual Bentwater Invitational Golf Tournament. It’s taking place on September 15th and 16th (and is completely sold out with a waiting list) which gives Mother Nature ample time to conjure up a sprinkle or two. Since, as I write this, we’re going on two months with nary a drop, the law of averages wouldn’t be a law at all if things didn’t average out at some point, right?
If you already know about it, you’re likely signed up. If you didn’t know about it, it’s too late. So, you ask, why am I bothering to tell you about? Good question. And the answer is because I hope you’ll show some love for co-Chairs Kathy Couchon and Wendy Paynter for all their hard work in pulling this event together. Everyone knows (or thinks they know) that golf outings make for easy fundraising, especially when an auction and other donation-generating fun stuff magically shows up. But, unless you’ve ever run one yourself, you have no idea what’s really involved. So, why would anyone volunteer to subject themselves to such stress? Well, in this case, Kathy and Wendy are doing it because, like so many of you now reading this, they believe in giving back (to their BLGA cohorts) and paying it forward (to Kid’s Meals). You see, all the money raised will be donated to the Kids’ Meals organization. If you don’t know them, you should. They provide free, healthy meals delivered right to the doorsteps of underserved kids, ages five and under, right here in our communities. These kids face food challenges at home but aren’t yet able to attend school where they might otherwise get such support. And these aren’t kids somewhere on the other side of the planet (though there are plenty of those, too). They’re right here. And the Kids’ Meals organization will receive 100% of the funds raised at several special events and activities affiliated with the golf tournament, with all monies designated specifically to those Montgomery County children in need. There are more than 2,000 free meals being delivered to them every week if you’re wondering.
And, hurricane humor aside, don’t blame me on the off chance that things really do get damp. After all, whoever decided on the name should’ve realized that it literally begs for a little tropical moisture. Just kidding. Or am I?
