There’s an election in your future (no, not that one), and it deserves your serious attention. The term for sitting Bentwater POA Director, Warren Dean, ends soon and there’s a need for someone equally diligent (thank you for your service, Warren) to fill that seat for the next three short years. So, this is a call to action for you civic minded citizens to step up.
It’s a big job but the pay’s great. Actually, it’s zero. But the job itself is easy. Consider that there are nearly 3,000 properties here in Bentwater, and they’re each entitled to an opinion (or several), yet there’s only one set of CC&Rs in place to guide the decisions of the community. And, since everyone signed those CC&Rs saying they read them (and a few may actually have) when they first bought property in our little oasis, there couldn’t possibly be any disagreement between rules and opinions.
So, it should be a cake walk for the incoming Director. Of course, there’s still that stubborn budget that has to be kept balanced and those pesky repairs which have to be done (within that budget) and that litany of dos and don’ts to be managed between the Board and the POA’s professional staff as required by the various local, state and federal governments. Apologies if this all seems a bit overwhelming, but it’s important to realize that this isn’t (or shouldn’t be) a popularity contest. Being a Board Member truly is serious business and needs to be approached with eyes wide open, by both the candidates and the voters. So, if you’ve been thinking of running yourself and, having just read all this, you aren’t discouraged, you’re probably the perfect person to vie for this open seat. And, you’re needed. The good news is, you still have time to declare your candidacy. Well, not much. Seems you’ll need to have submitted your nomination to the POA by Friday, Aug. 25, before noon. Ready. Set. Volunteer.
Speaking of volunteers, none does it better that Bentwater Volunteer Families (BVF). In addition to mentoring kids in the area, 6th-12th grades, this impressive organization has also historically provided support for many non-profit and community events. Neighborhood functions like the recycle events, Meals on Wheels, Grammy’s Cookie Convoy, food drives, and animal welfare in the form of donations to Animal Shelter Volunteers of Texas, just to mention a few. Interested in learning more? Then don’t just take my word for it. They meet the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Northshore Church, and their first for this new year season is at 7 PM on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Tell ‘em I said “hey.”
