The times, they are a changin’ and they’ll continue to change, I suppose, until the end of time which, according to all the news shows, could be any day now. But, for today, let’s live in the moment and that moment requires a bit of a flashback for you to fully appreciate it. That’s because, while you weren’t paying attention, summer ended. Yep, no matter what the thermometer says, summer’s over when school starts.
That’s especially true for those lucky enough to be heading back to the classrooms, and there’s a bunch of ‘em here in Bentwater. Back to school means school buses on our streets and youngsters wearing backpacks traipsing to and from wherever their particular bus happens to pick them up or drop them off. And, while they’re traipsing, it’s likely that their minds are focused on everything except what’s going on immediately around them. So, if they aren’t paying attention, you have to be even more aware, especially if you’re in a moving vehicle of any sort. They’ll get into the routine soon enough but, right now, current events are as distracting as they are exciting. Everything is new, at least for a little while. And that brings me back to the “flashback” part.
No matter how old you are or where you grew up, you remember sights and scents of new notebooks with clean sheets of paper, nary a mark anywhere. Boxes of crayons with none broken and, when you opened that box, every color was staring directly at you. Pencils with erasers still intact. Text books without dogeared pages. It was a new beginning. All your grades were still a perfect A+. There were new friends to be met. New relationships to be formed. The possibilities were endless. It was a new beginning, a chance to start over and maybe even make up for some of those goof ups (of goof offs) from last year. That newness may have only lasted for a few days but, admit it, you remember that feeling even now. And Bentwater’s kids are living it right now.
The Montgomery ISD has long been considered by many as being exemplary. Some 10,000 students strong, it’s why many families have moved to the areas west of Lake Conroe over the past decade or so. More recently, there’s another reason. Some call it progress. U-Haul reports that their number one destination for one-way rentals in the entire country is Texas. It seems the world is moving to Texas, and Montgomery County is attracting more than its fair share of that influx. You’re witnessing it. New subdivisions popping up on every corner. So, hang on. The times, they are indeed a changin’.
