For those few of you who may have missed Bentwater’s July 4 parade in person (and there couldn’t have been too many of you because the streets were lined with flag wavers from midway on Bentwood Drive and all the way down both sides of Bentwater Drive to the Country Club), I hope you’re able to catch some of the photos that have been posted online. If so, you’ll see that lots of folks spent hours (or days, maybe weeks) and significant financial investments to create their rolling displays of patriotism, solely for your entertainment. And entertaining it was. Full disclosure, their efforts may have also had something to do with a year’s worth of awesome bragging rights along with the prizes to be awarded by the panel of judges. That panel consisted of three of your neighbors, Mary Frances Doris along with her roommate, Kevin, who were conscientiously chaperoned by the third judge, Bob Stegge. This capable trio had the unenviable task of selecting individual winners from amongst dozens of participants within four unique categories. Drum roll please. The award for “Most Encompassing Spirit of the Holiday” was earned by the float designed and occupied by a throng of youngsters representing the Young Families of Bentwater. The “Best Creative Design” was a golf cart transformed into the Love Boat (and it actually looked like the Love Boat), orchestrated by Linda Pierce. The “Most Patriotic Golf Cart” featured an exceptional display or red, white and blue, including Uncle Sam standing on top, courtesy of Stein Chiropractic. And then the “Judges Choice” award presented to the Bentwater Ladies Organization to acknowledge the cart that the judges felt best incorporated aspects of all the other categories. Most of all, thanks to the hundred or so other participants who put together some impressive displays in honor of Old Glory. Giving back as it were.

If you’ve been paying attention, you know that in recent months Bentwater Life magazine has allowed me to write articles about some of your neighbors who have a demonstrated passion for giving back and/or paying it forward. So far, folks like Joe and Nancy Waltz, Dan and Deb Rose, Vinny and Sherry Sinisi and, most recently, Kirk and Janet Thomason have been featured. And there are others you’ll be seeing in the coming months. My challenge is that people don’t tend to talk about themselves, which means I have to depend on others (that’s you) to talk about them to me. So, if you know someone you would consider to be a proper candidate, I’d enjoy hearing from you. My email is below.
