For those who have followed my column for the last few years, I’ve tried to spread the good news from April Sound so that people were familiar with what was happening in our neighborhood. So, three years ago I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I’ve had surgeries and 24 chemotherapy treatments and have gone through quite a bit and now am resting at home on hospice care. I am surrounded by my loving husband John of 57 years, who has been by my side every single moment from the start holding my hand and helping me in every way.  My two daughters, Lara and Lisa, have come to stay for awhile and help us get organized with the new situation.  We have the very best hospice team we could ever ask for.
Throughout my whole journey, I have felt so blessed by the love and concern by the entire community. Not a day goes by that I don’t receive a call, card, visit or food.  I’d like to thank the April Sound Church Cookie Ladies and Men’s Group, Pastor Keith Sobus, the April Sound Ladies Association ladies, the April Sound Civic Association members, and the many dinner and game groups John and I belong to for all their kindness and concern.
When I was diagnosed, I prayed that I would have courage and strength to travel my new journey with faith and lean on God to guide me through. I have complete faith that I will be where I need to go when the time comes for Jesus to come for me. I have complete calm and no fear of what will happen.
There have been a lot of surgeries and treatments, along with a lot of pain.  I have constantly felt that God was with me and pulled me through the worst times with the strength I needed to go on. I’ve tried my best to continue all my activities as best as I could. I have still, through it all, tried to find joy in every single day. I have walked every step with hope.
This whole journey has taught me patience and empathy along with much understanding of others’ problems and illnesses. There are so many people going through illnesses. I have had amazing caretakers during my illness. I don’t know how long our journey will continue; however, I have truly experienced the most wonderful loving care I could ever imagine from so many people.  I am forever grateful.
On January 24th, it was by complete surprise and joy to be named the 2023 ASLA Woman of the Year. I have served since 2004 and have always been excited to do many fun projects and programs. I’m particularly proud of my Salvation Army Angel Tag program where we had 175 tags taken and fulfilled by the ASLA members and community.
John and I love April Sound and our beautiful friends and neighbors who make up our community. Again, thank you to all, and please know how much I appreciate everything.  God Bless.
