Tuesday afternoon our home phone rang. The man on the phone identified himself as Officer Gary Daniels, gave numbers 94900 and 00D223. He said that our daughter had been in a car accident. It was her fault, and the lady she had hit was 6 months pregnant and had been rushed to the hospital. Our daughter was being held by the police in case the baby died, her phone was confiscated, then a hysterical voice which sounded authentic sobbing said, “Oh, Mom, I’ve hurt someone!”

Then as I tried to answer her, it cut off. The “Officer” said her “court appointed attorney” would call us back in a few minutes with details of how we needed to proceed. Of course, we were distraught and worried! The next phone call followed shortly. This man identified himself as David Bell, Court Appointed Attorney.

He said that she was being held on bond and we would need $15,000 in cash to pay the bondsman. He added there was a gentleman with her in the car and asked if that was her husband or boyfriend. When I answered her husband, he said that he was in the hospital with a broken shoulder and other injuries, and that the police had taken his phone also. We should get the money and call 540-808-4925.

John and I headed to our Amegy Bank in Montgomery. On the way I called David Bell back at the phone number he had given me saying I needed details. Where she was being held? He said the police station in Navasota. She had a broken nose and other injuries. How was she getting medical treatment? He said they had an infirmary. John said if the bail bond is $15,000, then she’s being charged for $150,000? He replied that the judge she saw had a niece die in a car accident and was always hard on those cases. I suggested we just drive over to Navasota. He said “Oh, no, just get the money and call me back”.

We called the Navasota Police Department. They knew nothing of this, but they’d had a similar report recently. We dialed our daughter’s number, and she answered and was fine. I almost cried with relief. There is no way we were going to just hand over $15,000, but we always want to help our loved ones. After we were home awhile, David Bell called back wanting to know if we had the money. When I told him I had called Navasota, “CLICK!” — the phone went dead.

We contacted Security and talked with Tammy. She listened to the story and said she would tell the officers, let no one in the gate for us, and watch the house in case they would come for the money. What a relief to know Security is there for us! Thursday night Tammy called us to say that she saw a report from the San Jacinto Sheriff’s Office warning about something similar where they call and say their daughter is hurt, and when they rush off to the hospital, they break in their home! Be careful and be smart!
