Having lived in April Sound for 25 years, I have come to believe that it is a rather unique community in that there are so many residents willing to help neighbors, to volunteer for organizations within the neighborhood, and who want to reach out in friendship in any way they can. Years ago, when I was serving on the Long-Range Planning Committee of the ASPOA, we came up with the idea of starting something called “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”.
The scenario was that folks could sign up to be registered for helping, and the administrator would keep the volunteer list so that when someone called needing rides, shopping, simple errands run, they would be matched with someone available and willing to do what was needed. What we discovered over a time was that there were already many, many people doing all that on their own right in their own circle of homes. They knew who was ill or having surgery and took meals, checked on elderly neighbors, picked up items at the pharmacy or grocery store, and just offered assistance in whatever way they could.
Years ago the April Sound Ladies Association started something called “Care and Concern” in which the Interest Groups are asked to sign up for one month during which their group will be on call to take meals to those in the Association when needed. Especially in the last three years, as my husband and I have been on my journey with colon cancer, I cannot even begin to describe all the many kindnesses that have been shown to us by so many loving and sincere neighbors and friends. Kindness counts! I truly believe that. It is so very special to receive a card in the mail and to know someone thought about you.
A phone call to check and make sure that person is doing okay or if they need help in any way is always a blessing.
An example of a way to spread care and prayer within the community is “The Cookie Ladies” of the April Sound Church. I have been the recipient of their loving homemade gifts several times, and I know many others have also. This happy group of about fourteen ladies bake cookies every now and then. They get together and split the cookies into baggies to share with folks on the Prayer List at the Church. They also compile a page of meaningful and encouraging Bible verses. Then they go around for a short visit with those needing a little cheer. This is such a great idea! I’ve treasured their visits and loved sharing prayer with them. When they leave, you feel so very uplifted! Thank you, Cookie Ladies!
In the October issue of the ASPOA Newsletter there is an invitation for April Sounders to send in information about volunteerism both in our immediate neighborhood and in the greater community area. We hope to be able to share many more stories about how our residents are giving of their time and talents and spreading love and kindness!
