Lots of Rotary news happening this week.
The Rotary Club of The Woodlands kicked off a two-week celebration of their 50th year honoring their 50 years of service in their community. Two of the original members are still actives in this Club being Bill Lee and Tom Boak. Rotary Club Members from Bryan and Conroe were there to join in the festivities which were celebrated with a 50th birthday cake and sparkling wine toast. Plans are to place a time capsule in the ground at Tough Elementary School on May 19, 2025, being the official date the Rotary Club of Conroe sponsored the Rotary Club of The Woodlands. This coming Thursday, the Rotary Club of The Woodlands will continue its celebration honoring those past, current, and future Rotarians. President Denton Florian said at last Thursday meeting that Rotarians display the compassion, empathy, and love to help make the world a better place to live. In other words, Rotarians serve to make the world a better place.
The Rotary Club of Conroe is distributing “I Like Me” hard-back cover books to first graders in 13 schools feeding into Conroe High School. Those special books are written around these young readers lives based on input from parents in a questionnaire. The logistics is amazing since these books are printed and then boxed by class with teacher’s name on each box and then boxed by school. Rotarians and book sponsors hand out these books individually by class to the individual students. The looks on each face when receiving their special book is rewarding and acknowledgement of a job well done. The cost of each book is just over $10, but the impact is life-changing since many students will be receiving their first book that is theirs and not borrowed!
Students at Washington High School elected their first group of leaders for the new Interact Club that is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Conroe. President-elect Clarence Lewis was instrumental in breaking the barriers to get this Interact Club in place. Interact Clubs are Rotary Clubs on a high school level. The Principal at Washington High School, Dr. Nina Norman, believes this Interact Club will have a positive impact on students at this special high school and is the sponsor for this Interact Club. These elected Interact Officers will be attending a seminar in August before school begins to learn how to operate a successful Interact Club.
The Magnolia High School Pollinator Garden is a project funded and operated by the Rotary Club of Magnolia along with a grant from the Rotary International Foundation. Members of the Native Plant Society of Texas selected the plants which were planted by Rotarians, Rotary Interact club members and other volunteers in 2024. Rotarian Glen Buckley led the maintenance party last Saturday at the Magnolia High School Pollinator Garden on F. M. 1488. This ongoing Project makes a difference at Magnolia High School while benefitting the pollinators like bees and butterflies.
