Rotarian John Burgess and his wife Julie were looking forward to picking their daughter up at Camp Mystic Fourth of July weekend.

They came up in an RV to camp overnight at Blue Oak RV Park on the Guadalupe River so they could pick up their daughter on July 5. Tragically, their RV was swept away during the early morning flooding on July 4 and they lost their lives along with their young sons, James and Jack.

John was the incoming President-Elect for the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County for the Rotary Year beginning July 1, 2025.

A funeral took place for the family July 18.

Their daughter at Mystic Camp was safe and now lives with Julie’s mother. A fund is being established to take care of their daughter who lost her family. Please keep this family in your prayers as those others who were so tragically lost.

Rotarians are on the ground in Kerr County helping to clean up as the rescue operations taper off. Rotarian Elizabeth Logue is a retired firefighter and is helping “to put things together” for those needing help. She will be returning to Montgomery County as she prepares to re-start her job teaching and administrating at Lone Star College!

You know that school is starting with “Pigskin Preview” by the head coaches of the high schools in Conroe ISD. Be the FIRST to hear what these coaches are saying about their players this Tuesday at 11:30 at Honor Café when the Rotary Club of Conroe hosts the FIRST “Pigskin Preview” of the football season.

I am always impressed how these head football coaches take these young men and guide them through school work, the football practices, and instilling values and life lessons in our future leaders. It is amazing how each coach is focusing on the total person and not just the athletic side. The coaches also give a rundown of the support groups behind these players, the “spirit squads,” bands, and cheerleaders. These competing coaches show respect for the coaching capacities of the high school coaches and sing praises of their competition along with their fans. All are welcome to attend this first “Pigskin Preview.” This is a great way to get into the upcoming football season!

The Rotary Club of East Montgomery County will be hosting the Superintendents of Splendora ISD and New Caney ISD to talk about their school district’s approaches toward education. Each School Superintendent will have an entire Rotary Meeting to talk about their approach toward education. This is also the time when the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County does their clothing drive to provide “emergency clothing kits” for the various elementary schools to “rescue young students” from the humiliation of accidently soiling their young bodies at school. Accidents do happen with this Rotary Club prepared for these emergencies.

Lastly, Rotarians hosted an Interact Conference last Saturday at Lone Star College to educate incoming Officers of the various Interact Clubs in Montgomery County about their duties and responsibilities along with planning for the school year. Interact is Rotary on a “high school basis.” These Interact Clubs plan their fundraisers and service projects just like Rotarians do!

Look both ways while driving for those students since school starts in a few days!
