Rotarians are involved in our communities in not only serving, but keeping informed on matters of community importance. We gather data from reliable sources and make informed decisions and vote what is best for our community.
County Judge Mark Keough and Budget Director Amanda Carter visited the Rotary Club of Conroe last Tuesday to provide the facts on the upcoming 480 million dollar bond issue. By law, elected officials cannot endorse or be against such Bond Issues once an election is called for the voters to decide on the matter. Judge Keough provided information about the needs of Montgomery County. The County Commissioners reviewed potential projects and had over two billion dollars in projects.
The Bond Issue had to be significantly trimmed down so as to not provide a tax increase on voters. The amount of $480,000,000 was selected since at that level and with the ad volorem values what they are today, the tax consultants and the Budget Director looked conservatively at what level of bond amounts could be issued which would not increase taxes. They took into consideration the values of prior authorized bonds that were being paid off which freed some bond capacity to include in the proposed bond. Rotarians were told that 120 million dollars of road bonds per County Commissioner would provide that level of assurance that the taxes would not increase with the additional level of bond.
Judge Keough also made a commitment that authorized bonds would not be sold in time of reduced ad volorem values as happened in the early part of the 21st Century. After receiving this briefing, Rotarians left the meeting to go vote at the Montgomery County Main Library in Conroe on the first day of “early voting” for the 480 million dollar bond issue. Early Voting will continue today and Tuesday, April 29th from 7am to 7pm at early voting locations and on Saturday, May 3rd from 7am to 7pm at your designated voting precinct locations.
The Rotary Club of The Woodlands also receiving a bond briefing the prior Thursday from Deputy Chief of Staff Jason Smith. As Rotarians, we are interested in ensuring our communities move forward in a positive direction. That is why we try to stay informed and to ensure our communities move forward in a positive direction. Please exercise your right to vote after you have informed yourself of the issues.
Don’t forget the Rotary Club of Conroe is hosting their pancake supper “fun raiser” on Tuesday evening at Honor Café from 5:30 to 8pm. Rotarian Chris Sadler owns Honor Café and proudly supports Rotarians including hosting the pancake supper and weekly meetings on Tuesdays for the Rotary Club of Conroe. Chris established his restaurant to honor those in the military along with first responders. Chris models the gratitude that Rotarians show each day for those that continue to protect our Country and for those that put themselves in harm’s way to respond to local emergencies.
