The Rotary Club of Conroe is moving forward with two upcoming fundraising programs.

One of the key service projects of the Rotary Club of Conroe is its “I Like Me” book program. Sponsors for two, $1,000 sponsorships per elementary school are being solicited for these unique books.

The books are distributed to first-grade students in the 11 elementary schools which feed into Conroe High School. A questionnaire asks for personal information for each first grader in order to write a unique story about each, individual first grader. These hardback books become a loving tribute to that first graders life which deals with a day in the life of this first grader.

For many first graders, this is one of the first books that they own. Many of the first graders learn the fun of reading these books and retain these keepsakes for their lifetime. Community groups like Gullo Automotive Group and Quest Engineering have become longtime sponsors.

These sponsors see the importance of helping an entire school to become active readers. Sponsors will have their names placed on the inside cover of the books with sponsors receiving such recognition and the knowledge they are helping another generation to enjoy education.

This is the club’s 25th year for the project having distributed 31,348 books to first graders in the Conroe High School feeder zone.

Club President Ed Kelly said “We now meet teachers in the schools that still have their ‘I Like Me’ book! This year we expect to distribute another 1,700 books in 11 schools.”

The second fundraiser is actually re-labeled as a “fun-raiser” since the focus is on family fun in the community.

The Fifth Tuesday evening is historically a Rotary social event, but this month, Tuesday, April 29, will be a Pancake Supper at Honor Café in historic Downtown Conroe from 5 to 8 p.m.

The pancakes will be hot, the Maple syrup, sweet and sticky, the side dishes overwhelmingly paired with loads of family fun.

Tickets are currently available at $25 for adults and $10 for a child’s ticket. Tickets are available from club members or contact Club President Ed Kelly at 509-290-0082.

Tickets may also be purchased online at a link on the Rotary Club of Conroe website. On the club’s main page, go to Meetings, Fundraisers and Socials and click on “Register” for tickets.

Food and drinks are either dine-in or take-out.

Funds from this Pancake Supper will go to helping our community youth via scholarships, the annual Runyan Elementary school trip for motivated students to see the Houston Dynamo in action and much more.

For the Rotary Club of Conroe, it has always been “Service Above Self!” and while serving, Rotarians have fun!

The Rotary Club of Conroe meets each Tuesday at noon at Honor Cafe in downtown Conroe.
