A petition calling for the resignation of a longtime Willis Independent School District board member is circulating after he was arrested on a drunken driving charge in Conroe.

Cliff Williams was arrested Sept. 12 and has been charged with driving while intoxicated, Conroe Sgt. David Dickenson told The Courier.

Williams and Willis ISD officials declined to comment on the matter.

Williams, 43, has been on the board for 15 years and was re-elected in November.

Since his arrest, some community members have called for Williams’ resignation, while others have come to his support.

Last Friday, a user named Wildkat Advocates created a petition on Change.org calling for Williams’ resignation. As of Monday, the petition has received more than 100 signatures.

In the description of the petition, the user states “I am a resident of Willis, TX, deeply invested in the education and well-being of our children. It is disheartening to witness the actions and behavior displayed by Cliff Williams as an elected member of the Willis ISD School Board.”

The creator of the petition said it was crucial for public officials serving on school boards to maintain high standards when it comes to ethics and accountability “since they directly impact educational policies that affect thousands of young minds every day.”

“Mr. Williams has failed to uphold this responsibility with integrity,” the post reads.

The petition calls for a thorough investigation of Williams as well as his resignation.

In a Facebook post about the petition, some users voiced support of Williams, stating “everyone makes mistakes.”

“It’s a (DWI),” one user wrote. “That’s more than enough punishment in Montgomery County! Let him be.”

Another user wrote “why is this a thing?…we all know he’s wrong, he knows he’s wrong.”Â
