A new Willis sports complex is offering organizations space to train children and young adults in various programs.

The Core Sportsplex, at 12110 Old Montgomery Road, will be a space dedicated for students to train for all levels of schooling, according to a release from the company. It is expected to break ground in September and open early 2024.

Three organizations have partnered with the company — the Texas Diamonds, AirBorne Volleyball and the Eggz Flag Football. Both Texas Diamonds and AirBorne Volleyball give volleyball training to children ages 5 to 18.

“We also plan to have other fun activities to take place in and outside of our building,” said Brett Rhea, who co-owns the complex with his wife, Maria. There are discussions for additional activities outdoors such as tackle football, soccer and whiffle ball.

There’s potential for additional indoor sports such as pickleball, dodgeball, adult volleyball, wrestling and jujitsu tournaments.

“We (also) hope to offer community events (based on availability) such as food truck Fridays, Christmas markets, and birthday parties,” Rhea said in the release.

Willis High School varsity volleyball coach Megan Storms said the facility will boost the local sports scene.

“The Core Sportsplex will greatly help Willis and the surrounding communities with all sports,” she said in the release. “We have already seen tremendous growth in the sport of volleyball with the addition of club programs in the area. Adding an actual sports facility will only increase this growth.”

Getting children involved early will promote the development of athletes, which will in turn help the district be more competitive at middle and high school levels, she said.

Willis ISD Athletic Director Jason Glenn said the site will provide another way for children to find a sport that fits them.

“I see The Core Sportsplex becoming a groundbreaking facility for our community that will allow our athletes to catch up to so many other districts as far as training and being able to introduce our kids to an assortment of sports at an early age,” Glenn said.
