Montgomery Historical Society Membership Meeting
Please feel free to bring a friend—maybe invite a new neighbor—and learn more about General Sam Houston’s life and his contribution to Texas’ independence and his close relationship with Montgomery. This program will be presented by MHS President and Montgomery-born, Billy Ray Duncan.
During the meeting we will provide an update on our progress in determining the exact location of the Owen Shannon Family cemetery and original Trading Post, which was the beginning years of settling Montgomery, from which grew Montgomery County. The area is just north of the Lone Star Parkway, and east of Buffalo Springs Drive. This is an important development which was revealed in an 1840s document uncovered by Joy Montgomery, Board Member and Vice President of the Society, and a descendant of Margaret Shannon, wife of Owen Shannon. This discovery is momentous because Owen Shannon’s burial place had been suspected of being on this property he had owned, but there was no documentary proof before now.
Updated Montgomery Historical Society Board Members: With the resignation of Mary Eckhart,
President Billy Ray Duncan appointed Ledia Miller to assume Mary’s place on the
Board. Ledia has been volunteering
for three years, and had been named the Membership & Volunteer Chair, and Manager
of the N.H. Davis Museum.
The new listing
of the 9 Board Members
are now as follows: Billy Ray Duncan,
President; Joy Montgomery, Vice President; Shirley
Schneider, Treasurer; Eva Rains, Secretary. At Large: Brenda Beaven;
Donald Duncan; Cheryl
Fox; Bea Rouse;
and Ledia Miller.
Cindy Ambergue, with the Montgomery County Library & Family
History Genealogy Dept.,
has been named the Society’s
Historian. She has been asked
to create the history of the Society. (Other committee heads and
assignments will be discussed at the April 5, 2025, Board meeting.)
