The Woodlands 28, Klein Collins 27
The Woodlands blocked a field goal attempt as time expired and prevailed with a 28-27 victory against state-ranked Klein Collins in a Region II-6A Division I area playoff game at Woodforest Bank Stadium.
Quanell X Farrakhan Jr. gave the Highlanders (9-3) the lead for good with about a minute and a half remaining when he scored a 10-yard touchdown and the ensuing two-point conversion.
The Woodlands advances to the regional semifinals for the second consecutive season and 14th time in program history. No. 22 Klein Collins (10-2) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped.
Jackson Bolender and quarterback Mabrey Mettauer, making his return after missing last week due to injury, scored rushing touchdowns for The Woodlands. Scott Starzyk made two clutch field goals.
Rodny Ojo put Klein Collins ahead 27-20 in the fourth quarter with a 65-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Tucker Parks. Parks also had two short touchdown runs.
The Highlanders are 7-2 all-time against the Tigers, snapping a two-game slide from when the teams were district foes in 2018-19. The Woodlands will face defending state champion Duncanville (10-1) next week in a rematch from last season.
Lake Creek 78, Crockett 27
Lake Creek was dominant from start to finish during a 78-27 victory against Crockett in a Region III-5A Division II area playoff matchup at Giddings’ Buffalo Stadium.
Lake Creek (12-0), No. 1 in the final state rankings, advanced to the regional semifinals for a second straight season. The Lions have won 24 of their last 25 games.
Lake Creek also reached 600 points scored for the second consecutive season. The 78 points scored against the Bulldogs was a season-high and the second time with 70-plus points this season.
Tyvonn Byars rushed for three first-quarter touchdowns and added two more in the second half after the Lions led 43-21 at the break.
Elijah Naziruddin and Peyton Trummell also had rushing scores, as did quarterback Eli Morcos, who passed for three touchdowns.
The Lions have a tough matchup next week against last year’s state runner-up, Port Neches-Groves (11-1). The Indians defeated Leander Rouse 51-14 on Friday.
That regional semifinal will take place 4 p.m. Friday at C.E. King Panther Stadium.
College Station 45, Magnolia 21
Magnolia saw its season come to a close with a 45-21 loss against College Station in Region III-5A Division I area playoff action at Cougar Stadium.
Magnolia (9-3) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped. The Bulldogs were the runners-up in District 10 behind Fulshear and made a big turnaround this year following a 3-7 season.
College Station (11-1), No. 9 in the final state rankings, has won 11 straight. The Cougars are headed to the regional semifinals for the third consecutive season.
Magnolia trailed 17-14 at halftime. Hunter Andrews returned a kick 99 yards for a touchdown and added a 3-yard touchdown run. Colin Leahy had a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
College Station will take on Smithson Valley (11-1) next week.
Smithson Valley 20, Magnolia West 17
Magnolia West finished its season with a 20-17 loss against Smithson Valley in Region III-5A Division I action at Temple’s Wildcat Stadium.
Magnolia West (7-5), the fourth-place team from District 10, trailed 20-3 with under nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before mounting a furious rally attempt.
Smithson Valley (11-1), No. 4 in the final state rankings, has won 11 straight games and will be making its second consecutive regional semifinals appearance.
The Rangers will play College Station (11-1) next week.
Conroe Covenant 67, Waco Live Oak Classical 38
The Cougars are back in the TAPPS Division II (6-man) semifinals.
Conroe Covenant took down Waco Live Oak Classical 67-38 Friday night to advance to the step before state for the third straight year.
Jackson Rudy threw six touchdown passes for the Cougars (11-1) and was intercepted twice. He also rushed for two scores. He totaled 261 yards through the air and 183 on the ground.
Charlie Wade caught five touchdown passes and totaled 167 yards on seven receptions. Colby VanBruane caught two touchdown passes and threw for another.Â
Covenant will face Pasadena First Baptist Christian for the second straight year in the state semifinals. The Warriors won 67-20 over the Cougars earlier this year and 84-26 in the playoff game last year.
The game will be played Saturday.
