MISD Art Exhibit a Big Success
Lake Creek High School had a busy Saturday this past week, as the 2nd Annual Montgomery Independent School District Art Exhibit was in full force, displaying approximately one-thousand pieces of art from all eleven MISD schools in the LCHS cafeteria. A steady stream of students, parents, and grandparents entered the school during the duration of the show between 10am – Noon, where estimates of attendance were between 800-1000 attendees. The students submitted ceramics, sculpture and mixed media, drawings, and paintings for exhibit, showing that MISD has a healthy cadre of talented art minded scholars. The first district art exhibit was held last year at Montgomery High School.
Many students confidently showed their works of art to their friends and relatives, proudly posing with their creations, and even with the lower grades, many pieces were well thought out by the artists. Each school contributed about 90-100 works of art filling most of the cafeteria at LCHS. Art teachers representing each school were on hand, receiving hugs from their students, and welcoming parents to the exhibit. There was a section of artworks which received Awards of Excellence, Gold Medals, and Best of Show, from The Houston Livestock Show School Art Program.

“We plan on having prizes next year,” said Montgomery High School Art Teacher Laura Page-Kerner. “This is only our second year, so we are still growing with ideas.”
Several tables of lifelike ceramics really impressed, as well as representations of items from cheetos to bags of candies, and pinatas. One table was filled with edibles ready for a feast from Mexican cookies to fruits and tacos, while another was filled with containers, a shark, and a dual-faced piece with a human likeness on one side, as opposed to an aquatic being on the other.
There was a section of art made from aluminum foil tape, which is an interesting medium used in art, with themes ranging from religious to the floral. The monochromatic art done in pencil had pictures of fruit, portraits of friends and family members of the artists, to several celebrities like Johnny Depp in the character of Captain Jack Sparrow.
A section of paper plate art featuring a Japanese Pagoda in differing shades of blue from a Keenan Elementary School project was remarkable, and showed the amount of talent that MISD possesses at all of its institutions of learning. There were brightly colored pieces of art everywhere viewers looked, with even some from Montgomery Elementary School expressing impressionist ideas invoking thoughts of Claude Monet’s ‘Impression, Sunrise.’ Riley Duke, a Senior at LCHS, painted a wonderful lioness, which stood out on its panel with gold flakes.
Outer Space was a popular theme, along with animals, nature, architecture, and still lifes. Preston Henriksen, a Freshman from LCHS, presented an accurate representation of a Black Hole with a twist of a Japanese Hentai character being caught up in the chaos. A few pieces even incorporated pointillism, a painting technique in which small dots of color are placed in a pattern to form an image, made famous by Georges Seurat in the 1880s.

“It’s amazing to have so many in attendance,” said Keenan Elementary Art Teacher Amy Suttles. “We continue to show momentum in showing off the talent of MISD artists.”
Lake Creek Culinary students provided cake balls and other little appetizers for those who wanted a treat, or lemonade. While MHS student Julian Ruelas, played his Alto Sax as background music for those attending the exhibit. Next year the MISD Art Exhibit will return to Montgomery High School, where its inaugural year was held.
