MCN's 'Veteran of The Week' - Donald Sparks

This week’s Veteran is Donald Sparks, who served in the U.S. Army from 1985 – 2018. Donald was at The Ensemble Theatre last Friday taking in the new play ‘Flex,’ with his lovely wife. Donald initially entered the service in 1985 as a US Army Reserve Dental Specialist, then in 1988 went Active Duty, first as a Medical Supply Specialist; then in 1992, changed to Public Affairs, taking up the pen, pad, camera, and rifle at the same time. Think of Sparks as the Matthew Modine character ‘Joker,’ in ‘Full Metal Jacket.’ Donald has been stationed in the States at multiple bases, plus twice to both Germany and South Korea, so he knows about hamburgers, schnitzel, and kimchi. Sparks was well respected by his fellow soldiers, and has won numerous journalism awards in writing and photography. Donald was deployed to four combat zones over the years, Operation Desert Shield/Storm in Iraq, in the early 1990s; Operation Iraqi Freedom III, 2005-2006, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, 2012; and Operation Inherent Resolve in Syria, 2015-2016. Montgomery County bows to You Mr. Sparks, thanking you for your dedicated Service to Our County. Sparks is currently the Communications Director for the Houston Community College Central Campus. Good Luck Donald, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Veteran of the Week’.
