MCN's 'Veteran of The Week' - Cameron Welch

This week’s Veteran is Cameron Welch, who served in the US Army from 1995-1998. Cameron and his wife Sherina were recently at the Madeley Fine Art Gallery, home of the Conroe Art League gallery on Simonton Street in Conroe. For those who were born in Houston between 1964 and 1973, Cameron’s grandfather was Houston Mayor Louie Welch, and he sent every newborn a welcoming document with his signature, just in case you were wondering. Cam was a US Army Cavalry Scout, and acted as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the commander on the battlefield, gathering information about enemy positions, terrain, and weather to support military operations. Welch was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana. In 1995, Cameron was sent to Haiti as part of the United Nations forces for Operation Uphold Democracy. He was part of the security forces for the election, and as a 19 year old at the time, he grew up fast. Unfortunately, Haiti has not improved since he left, and Cam has no plans to return. In 1997, Welch was part of the NATO Forces in Bosnia, where he did Recon, Stabilization of Forces, Security, Weapons storage, site inspections, and riot control. Some say he looked pretty good in a UN blue beret. You might remember the 1997 movie ‘The Peacemaker,’ starring George Clooney, and Nicole Kidman, which was partly set in Bosnia; well, Welch had nothing to do with that. Although he is rumored to have been the inspiration for Clooney’s character at the time. After he left service, Cameron started with law enforcement, and is now part of a top secret hush-hush multi-agency team that puts the most dangerous bad guys away in the Houston region. Good Luck Cameron, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Veteran of the Week’.
