Shepherd grew up in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri before his family moved to Virginia when he was in high school. His dad worked for General Electric and he has fond memories of his mother’s relatives coming over to play country music.
In college, he thought he’d study television and film, but the urge to play music was strong and he joined his first band. His path was set and he headed to Nashville after college.
He found success as a songwriter in the “Music City.”
Shepherd is the writer of five No. 1 singles including “Redneck Yacht Club,” “Riding with Private Malone,” and three Texas music number ones. In total, he has written over 10 radio singles, two Grammy nominated songs, and has had over 100 songs recorded by other artists. He was also named the CMA Texas Songwriter of the Year.
Coley McCabe also sings and writes. In 2000, she signed to RCA Records Nashville and released two singles. The first of these, “Grow Young with You” (a duet with labelmate Andy Griggs), was also included in the soundtrack to the 2000 film “Where the Heart Is.”
They were both working for Nashville publishing companies in the same building when they met and now they travel the country together as performers.
In 2007, Shepherd played at a Parrot Head event in New Orleans and at once knew he’d found his people. The legion of Parrot Heads — followers of Jimmy Buffett’s music and the Trop Rock genre and lifestyle — had him asking “Where have you people been all my life?”
For the first four years, the Lone Star Luau took place in Marble Falls, Texas just outside of Austin.
The first year they packed 200 people in Marble Falls’ Brass Hall. They second year they moved the event to the Lakeside Pavilion with a capacity of 425. The event regularly draws fans from 20-plus states. The past few years the four-day event has taken place at Margaritaville.
