Firefighters in Montgomery County contained a house fire in 25 minutes after a lightning strike sparked the fire.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — Firefighters in Montgomery County battled a house fire caused by a lightning strike Thursday afternoon, with one firefighter injured when an explosion sent a garage door flying during the response.

The incident began just after 3 p.m. when firefighters with Montgomery County Emergency Service District #3 were dispatched to reports of a lightning strike at the single-story home. It happened at a home on Dandelion Way in the neighborhood east of Fish Creek Thoroughfare at Central Pine Street.

Engine 34 and Ladder 34 from the Woodforest fire station responded and arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home.

As crews approached the home, an explosion caused the garage door to blow open, striking one of the firefighters. The captain then called for a second alarm due to the escalating situation.

Despite the incident, all firefighters were able to continue working. Ladder 34’s Engineer quickly positioned the ladder truck and began flowing water to knock down the flames, allowing other crews to enter the home and extinguish the fire that had spread to the attic.

The fire was brought under control in approximately 25 minutes. The Montgomery County Hospital District provided medical care for the firefighters on scene.
