President Katherine Maher called to order the February 27th meeting of Lake Conroe Centennial Lions Club and followed by leading us in a prayer and the pledges to the American and Texas flags. Birthday boy Bob Neilsen was recognized with a rousing LCCLC Happy Birthday Song!
We were fortunate that evening to have two Guest Speakers.
Mike Berger, from the Rotary Club of Lake Conroe, educated us on the history of polio and where we are currently. The first outbreak of polio in the United States was in 1894. A polio vaccine was developed in 1955, and an oral vaccine was introduced in 1961. In 1988 Rotary International, along with WHO, UNICEF and CDC formed the Global Polio Eradication Partnership to eradicate polio worldwide and in 1994 the Americas were certified to be polio free. This year, 2025, there have been only three identified cases to people living in Pakistan and Afghanistan. As an aside, LCCLC Vice President Shirley Abt mentioned that she had a cousin who had contracted polio as a child in the 1950’s and because of it her feet were two different sizes! She had to always buy two pairs of shoes!
Janet Heath then introduced our second speaker Sarah Taylor with “Yes to Youth”, a Montgomery County Youth Services organization that strengthens the emotional and mental health development of youth and families by providing crisis intervention, counseling, and suicide prevention. This includes safe and nurturing accommodations where abused, battered, sex-trafficked, homeless and at-risk youth begin healing from the past and become empowered for the future. These services are free to anyone, no matter his or her financial ability. Started 45 years ago as an emergency shelter in Conroe, it has expanded to an 8-acre site which includes several facilities. One of those is the Bridgeway Shelter which houses children from 10 to 17 years old. This shelter provides everything that they need while staying there and when they leave the shelter, all the items go with them. Bridgeway Shelter Tours are given every Thursday. Sarah also mentioned that a “Say Yes to Youth” Gala will be held on August 9, 2025, to help support the organization. For more information, please go to sayyestoyouth.org.
