“Historic Victory”

“Historic Victory”

Over Spring
Break, the MISD Fishing Team did something that had never been done in the
history of the Team. They won the Texas High School Bass Association Houston
Division event on Lake Limestone by a whopping twenty-five pounds, shattering
the previous record set by the Team back in 2018, where that Team won a
Regional Championship by sixteen pounds, which was unheard of at the time.

In fact, the
Team on Saturday March 8th narrowly missed winning with the
trifecta, where Individual Teams would win First, Second, and Third. As many of
you are aware, the top three Individual Teams from each school or program have
their total weight for the day combined, to determine the School Winner. The
actual finish for this day would be First, Second, and Fourth for the Top three
Teams from MISD, with the Fourth-place team, narrowly missing Third by .02
ounces. Combined, the top three Teams from MISD amassed a staggering 58.41
pounds, for the third highest total in program history.

MISD was led
by first place finishers Zane Ellis and Weston Moore, who had an impressive five
fish limit that tipped the scales at 20.46 pounds. Their Captain David Moore
said that “the guys caught most of the fish on shallow timber near deep
water.” David went on to say that “they
also caught a few on shallow rocks and docks with a shaky head trick worm, with
being close to deeper water being the key.”

Coming in Second
for MISD were Jacob Riley and Brenner Kirklin with a five fish limit weighing
20.07 pounds. Their Captain Jason Riley indicated that “the boys caught all
their fish in 2 to 6 feet of water on weightless senkos and swim jigs. They
primarily targeted pre-spawn fish, staging in a little deeper water.” These 2024 State Qualifiers are no strangers
to success on the High School Fishing Circuits, and we are counting on them to
help lead the way into Regionals, and hopefully another State Berth as well.

Limestone Second Place

Our fourth
place Team was Carson Francis and Garrett Springer, who weighed in a five fish
limit of 17.88 pounds. Their Captain Matt Francis indicated that “Carson and
Garrett started by fishing slow, flipping docks with soft plastics, catching
one keeper at 8 A.M. They then switched to shallow rip rap, with once again a
slow presentation being the key.” Mr.
Francis went on to say that “I was impressed with their teamwork, positive
attitude, casting skills, as well as boat positioning. Even though they were
culling fish, they fought to the end, catching their last scoreable bass with
just minutes to spare.”

Another
highlight to this tournament was the fact that the “Fishing

Firm” of Scogin
& Scogin had another top ten finish, coming in seventh place out of 149
Individual Teams from 19 High Schools. This strong finish puts these cousins
Brad and Lucas square in the Top Ten for the Angler of the Year Race, with one
tournament to go. There, they join Jacob Riley and Brenner Kirklin, Colton
Hatzold and Jett Moore, as well as Brooks Gerner and Zachary Smith, all
squarely in the hunt for the elusive Anglers of the Year Title for the Houston
Division. An accomplishment which Teams from MISD have accomplished Seven Times.

Limestone Fourth Place

By securing
this “Historic Victory,” the MISD Fishing Team is
firmly in First place in the
Houston Division of the THSBA, with one Divisional tournament to go at Lake Sam
Rayburn at the end of the month. It will be there, that the Team looks to earn
its’ Tenth Divisional Title in Eleven years of competing.
