It was cloudy and humid morning on July 5th, but the breeze coming from the south made Historic Montgomery very pleasant, as the citizens enjoyed the annual 4th of July Parade, the First Saturday Homemade Goods market at the Montgomery Community Building, and a temporary water park, the Montgomery Water Party, was set up for the kids, which also on the same grounds. Although the numbers of visitors were a bit below expectations, due to the City holding out for the weekend to combine all the events, it was a good call seeing as July 4th was very wet.
The parade formed on Clepper Drive, before snaking its way through Historic Montgomery along McCown and Liberty Streets, with Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets from MISD leading the way. Various groups from around Montgomery County participated, such as the Montgomery County Pct. 2 Mounted Posse, who sent several riders from their team. Chick-Fil-A in Montgomery sent a catering van with their famous cow bringing up the rear.
“It’s always nice to see floats with the American Flags,” said Pat Alexander from Cape Conroe. She was clapping and cheering each float as it passed by her on Liberty Street. “I am very Patriotic and love Our Country very much.”
Many families and friends lined the streets of Historic Montgomery to see the organizations and businesses involved in the parade. The Montgomery County Jeep Society was well represented with vehicles of all descriptions, and people soon lost count of the ducks that routinely rest behind the windshields of each jeep.
“I attend all the events here in Montgomery, and love to see the flags of the July 4th Parade,” said Linda Mock, from Dobbin. “We need more Patriotism and Love for Our Nation.”

Many who attended brought their children, and a number of families coordinated their outfits with red skirts or with Red, White, and Blue shirts, pants, hats or caps. The City of Montgomery sponsored the event and oversaw the security. Historic Montgomery also saw a brisk business at the First Saturday market, as well as the different shops about the area.
“I want to thank all of you who came out for the festivities today,” said Mayor Sara Countryman. “And a special thank you to the groups that participated in the parade today.”
The Mayor also made a special plea to the crowd to please pray for the Victims of the Guadalupe River Flooding, and it was apparent that Countryman was deeply affected by the news coming out of Central Texas.
