Memorial Day means honoring and remembering those who died serving our country.

Remember and honor our military who lost their lives serving our country by attending a local event Memorial Day Weekend. As you plan activities with family and friends, please keep in mind this is not a “happy” holiday for surviving parents, spouses, children, and those who have lost a loved one actively serving our country. You may not realize it, but saying Happy Memorial Day is not something that should be said to a surviving family. Although it marks the beginning of summer, this day was designated as Decoration Day in May 1868 as a day for our country to decorate the graves of those lost to war with flowers.

Memorial weekend is also a time to check on the American flag hanging outside your house. Worn flags should be replaced with new flags. Flags that are no longer suitable for display should be placed in depositories to ensure proper retirement. In the Conroe area there is a box to “retire” flags in the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park, the main Conroe Central Library (next to the Veterans Memorial Park) and in Honor Café.

Forest Park, The Woodlands is hosting the 17th Annual Memorial Day “Tribute to Heroes and Freedom” on Monday, May 26 starting at 10:00am. The park is located at 18000 Interstate 45 South in The Woodlands. This is a free community event to include an invocation by County Judge Mark Keough, a Presentation of the Colors, a Wreath Ceremony, patriotic music, and special guest speaker, Kristofer Healy with words of remembrance for those who served our country.

Visitors can view the graves of over 500 veterans at Forest Park marked by flags set beside the gravesites prior to the event. The tribute service is an opportunity for everyone to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day- honoring the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The tribute service sets the tone for a day filled with gratitude as a reminder to be considerate of the freedoms we all enjoy. After the ceremony attendees are invited to enjoy food catered by Honor Cafe at no charge.

The National Moment of Remembrance is Monday, May 26 at 3:00pm with a moment of silence to honor those who died in service to our country. My son, Specialist Joey Martens Lenz, is one of them. Joey died February 1, 2022. Visit his bench, the bench of LCPL Armando Hernandez, and the names on the Wall at the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Park. To us, every day is Memorial Day.

After Memorial Day, on Friday, May 30th the Crighton Theatre will host a Tribute to the legend, Neil Diamond at 7:30pm. Saturday, May 31, Sting Ray’s Jukebox Rock Show will have music from Chubby Checker, Rick Nelson, Bobby Darin, and many artists of the 50’s and 60”s. Sting Ray’s band “The Stingers” and The Ladies of “Shake Rattle and Roll” give you an unparalleled tribute to some of the greatest music in Rock’n’roll History.

Remember the pools are now open with the City of Conroe. The Conroe Waterpark is open Tuesday through Sunday 10:00am-6:00pm, and on July 4 10:00am-6:00pm. Admission is $10 with concessions available on site. There is also a pool located at the Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Center Pool, 100 Park Place, with a $3 entry fee, open Monday through Saturday 1:00pm-6:00pm.

Until next week!
