Below is a roundup of Montgomery County high school football games from Friday night.
Magnolia 27, Tomball 7
Magnolia blew a 7-7 game at halftime wide open with an explosive second half.
The Bulldogs scored three touchdowns on the ground in the second half via runs by Hunter Andrews, Tanner Whittington and Colin Leahey.
Andrews also had a touchdown catch from Whittington in the first half. Andrews finished with 155 rushing yards. Whittington threw for 76 yards.
Magnolia is 1-1. Tomball fell to 1-1.
Magnolia is 8-4 all-time versus Tomball.
New Caney 31, Porter 14
The Battle Line on 59 highway sign trophy remains at New Caney as the Eagles topped Porter for the 14th consecutive year.
Both teams came in 1-0 as New Caney (2-0) beat Montgomery 35-34 last week and Porter (1-1) beat Dayton 42-21.
The Eagles jumped up early and led 21-14 at halftime.
Dravon Wilson had a 32-yard touchdown run on the opening drive. After Dijon Lewis blocked a punt, David Stewart scored from two yards out. Aaron Stewart caught a 13-yard pass from Hunter Taylor in the second quarter.
Porter quarterback Payton Evans-Pickens had a 7-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and then with two seconds left before halftime, he hit Aaron Gilliam for a 9-yard touchdown. Evans-Pickens rushed for 96 yards and threw for 80.
Joel Rodriguez made a 40-yard field goal in the third quarter and Kayden Cooper had an electric 33-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-short in the fourth quarter as the Eagles pulled away.
Lewis had a first-half fumble recovery and Hunter Quinn had an interception.
Ryan Gilliam led Porter with nine tackles while Sean Ingram had eight.
District 13-6A starts for New Caney Friday at home against Willis at 7 p.m. Porter starts District 8-5A Division I at Kingwood Park and Turner Stadium 7 p.m. on Friday.
Barbers Hill 56, Montgomery 6
Barbers Hill rolled past the Bears in non-district play Friday as Montgomery opened the home schedule.
The Eagles rolled out to a 42-0 lead at halftime over the Bears.
Barbers Hill 2-0 for the first time since 2016 after beating Magnolia West by 10 last week.
Montgomery drops to 0-2 after a heartbreaking 35-34 loss at New Caney last week.
Nick Shivers was 8-for-10 passing for 85 yards. DQ Swapsy led in rushing with 82 yards while Damian Taylor scored the lone touchdown and totaled 39 yards. Talan Shavers caught eight passes for 92 yards.
The Eagles also defeated Montgomery last year, 42-10.
Barbers Hill begins District 8-5A Division I play Friday at home against Baytown Sterling at 7 p.m. Montgomery continues non-district play with a 7 p.m. meeting at Dayton on Friday.
Magnolia West 49, Bush 6
Magnolia West blasted Bush for the second straight year to wrap up non-district play.
The Mustangs (1-1) bounced back after a 10-point loss to Barbers Hill last week.
Bush, which went 2-8 last year, lost 34-3 to Cypress Springs last Saturday.
Bryson Broadway threw six touchdown passes for the Mustangs. Brandon Taylor had touchdown receptions of 89 and 35 yards. He totaled 136 yards on three receptions. Chase Lott had two touchdown receptions while Gus Jordan and Parker Robinson each had one.
Magnolia West won last year’s meeting against the Broncos, 43-0.
Magnolia West has a bye next week and returns Sept. 15 to start District 10-5A Division I at Kempner on Sept. 15. Bush hosts Ridge Point this coming Friday at 7 p.m. from Mercer Stadium to begin District 20-6A.
Lamar 45, The Woodlands 21
Lamar snapped a four-game slide against The Woodlands and improved to 2-0 Friday night in non-district play.
It was the sixth straight season the teams have met.
The Texans (2-0) led 35-7 at halftime. They came in off a 51-7 win over Beaumont West Brook.
Jordan Reaves threw three touchdown passes for Lamar. Tristen Brown had nine catches for 180 yards and two scores. Dayvyon Gipson caught a touchdown pass. Justin Howard rushed for 196 yards and three scores.
For the Highlanders, Jackson Bolender had two touchdown receptions while Aden Self had one.
The Woodlands is off to an 0-2 start for the first time since 2018. It lost 38-17 to the Chronicle’s No. 1-ranked North Shore last week.Â
Lamar travels to Clear Falls for a non-district game Friday at Challenger Stadium. The Woodlands begins District 13-6A as the away team Friday night against Oak Ridge at Woodforest Bank Stadium.
Willis 45, Temple 17
Daylion Robinson totaled four touchdowns as Willis took down Temple Friday in non-district action at Berton A. Yates Stadium.
The Wildkats, coming off a 52-21 win over Bryan Rudder last week, are 2-0 for the first time since 2016.
Robinson had three touchdown runs (2, 30 and 11 yards) and also caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback DJ Lagway. Lagway had a 57-yard run in the second quarter while Terri Lawrence rushed in a 14-yard score as Willis led 28-14 at halftime.
Justin Willis added a late 21-yard field goal.
Lagway had 192 yards passing. Robinson finished with 132 rushing yards and 65 receiving yards.
Earl Menebeck, Imauree Holmes and Jermaine Bishop Jr. all had interceptions for Willis while Carter Jenkins and Cannon Roach both recovered fumbles.
Temple defeated McKinney Boyd 57-34 last Friday. The Wildcats beat Willis 34-20 in last year’s meeting.
Willis travels to New Caney 7 p.m. Friday at Randall Reed Stadium to begin District 13-6A. Temple hosts College Station the same night in non-district play.
Dobie 27, Grand Oaks 10
Cameron Mathews rushed for three touchdowns as Dobie avenged a 17-14 loss to Grand Oaks last season.
Mathews had scoring runs of 24, 32 and 20 yards. Daniel Campero hit field goals of 30 and 34 yards for the Longhorns (2-0).
Grant Smith had an 8-yard touchdown run for the Grizzlies, who drop to 0-2.
Dobie hosts Dickinson 7 p.m. Friday at Pasadena Veterans Memorial in non-district play.
Grand Oaks hosts College Park 7 p.m. Thursday at Woodforest Bank Stadium as District 13-6A begins.
Caney Creek 27, Galena Park 7Â Â
Caney Creek is 2-0 for the first time in five years after winning its home opener over the Yellowjackets Friday night.
The Panthers were defeated by Galena Park 35-7 last year.
The Yellowjackets (1-1) beat Goose Creek Memorial 14-13 last week.
Caney Creek is the away team against Conroe 7 p.m. Friday at Moorhead Stadium as District 13-6A starts.
Galena Park hosts Splendora 7 p.m. Friday in non-district.
Oak Ridge 41, Stratford 34
Oak Ridge fell behind 14-0 quickly Friday night, but stormed ahead to win its home opener over the visiting Spartans at Woodforest Bank Stadium.
Oak Ridge (1-1) scored five times in the first half to lead 35-21 at the break.
Frankie Arthur had two touchdown runs (22 and 17 yards). Quarterback Adam Trosclair had a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tevian Jefferson and a 29-yarder to James Scott. Scott then caught another one in the third quarter from 17 yards out.
Larry DeBose had a short touchdown run for the War Eagles, who opened with a 13-7 loss to Brenham last week.
Stratford, which fell 48-28 to Tomball in Week 1, had four touchdown passes by Aaron DeLeon. Braxton Wakefield had two second half touchdown receptions. Derrick McGee and Luke Rives each had one touchdown from DeLeon. On a double-pass in the first quarter, Jackson Miller hit Jackson Stewart for a 33-yard touchdown.
Oak Ridge hosts The Woodlands as District 13-6A begins 7 p.m. next Friday at Woodforest Bank Stadium. Stratford hosts Alief Hastings 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Tully Stadium.
Coldspring-Oakhurst 22, Splendora 14
Splendora came up short in the non-district home game Friday night.
Wildcats quarterback Jacob Lubbers threw a touchdown pass to Angel Montero. Lubbers totaled 161 yards. Kaden Grahlfs had four receptions for 71 yards.
Isaac Shumate rushed in a touchdown and he totaled 14 tackles. Caleb Cash had a fumble recovery, Aiden Miranda had a sack and Ethan Bratton forced a fumble.
Splendora (1-1) continues non-district play next Friday at home against Hamshire-Fannett.
Cypress Christian 24, John Cooper 10
The Dragons fell for the second straight week on Friday.
Quarterback Santiago Fernandez Villarreal threw for 134 yards and a score for the Dragons (0-2). He also led in rushing with 85 yards. Gus Feinberg caught a touchdown pass and totaled 116 yards on the night on 10 receptions. Tanner Mandalinci hit a 33-yard field goal.
Cooper travels to Dallas St. Mark’s on this Friday.
