In 2017 after the final set of the Conroe Americana Festival, my wife and I thought we would pop in to say goodbye to friends at the Corner Pub in downtown Conroe.
Folk Family Revival, who had performed twice at the festival, were playing an impromptu set and closed with a lengthy cover of The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues.” I have seen a lot of live music but never had I experienced a rocking scene like this. Literally everyone in the packed club was dancing, several on top of tables!
Folk Family Revival is a rock band from Magnolia that has put out several albums with original music and toured nationally. To fit the theme of a hill country festival they play at every year, they have expanded from just playing “Roadhouse Blues” to an entire set of Doors’ songs. They will play a Doors Tribute Show at Bernhardt Winery on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15 at 7 p.m.
I recently had a chance to visit with Folk Family Revival lead singer Mason Lankford about the concert. “We have always liked The Doors’ music and have incorporated some of their style into our own music. We will play many of their best-known songs like “Light My Fire”, “Break on Through”, “Roadhouse Blues”, “LA Woman” and several others. We will also play a few of our own original tunes. This will the first opportunity for people in this area to hear us do The Doors Concert.”
Members of Folk Family Revival include brothers Barrett Lankford, Caleb Pace and Mason Lankford. Matt Rooney plays drums. Keyboards are an essential part of The Doors music and talented Conroe area musician Charles Peters has been added for this show.
Bernhardt Winery owner Jerry Bernhardt is excited to have The Doors Show at his venue. He said, “In the 21 years of having live music at the winery, we haven’t had a Doors show. We have had people ask for one and we are happy to finally have one.”
The Doors were an important part of the sixties music scene. Oliver Stone made a movie about them in 1991 that starred Val Kilmer with Meg Ryan in a small role right before she became a star.
The original Rolling Stone Record Guide said of The Doors: “Brash, courageous, adventurous and exciting. The Doors were all this and more. Of all the groups to emerge from the West Coast in the sixties, only The Doors succeeded to consistently get their edgy music to the core of America.”
But The Doors also were part of the darker side of sixties music. Jim Morrison and fellow icons Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin each died when they were only 27.
Perhaps the reason there hasn’t a been a Doors Tribute at Bernhardt Winery before is that the complexity of their music is difficult to learn. Fans of Folk Family Revival know they are up to the task.
Bernhardt Winery is located at 9043 County Road 204, about 10 miles west of Montgomery just off Highway 105 West. It is family-friendly venue that is perfect for a Father’s Day entertainment event. Coolers are allowed for picnics but NO outside alcohol is allowed per TABC rules. Wine, a selection of craft beers, soft drinks and water are sold by the winery. Food can also be purchased from the winery or from the onsite food trucks.
