A man drowned in Lake Conroe while swimming near Adkins Creek after his boat drifted away, marking the first 2025 drowning reported in the lake.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas — A man drowned in Lake Conroe Sunday evening after jumping into the water near Adkins Creek, according to the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office.

Deputies said the man was with family members from different parts of the U.S. and had rented a boat just before 5 p.m.

The group was in the area between Walden and April Sound when the man, who was operating the boat, dropped anchor and jumped into the lake for a swim.

What he didn’t realize, according to deputies, was that the water in that area was about 35 feet deep, and the anchor had not taken hold.

As the wind began pushing the boat away, the man tried to swim back to it but went under and never resurfaced.

A 911 call was made, and emergency crews from multiple agencies responded, including the Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable’s Lake Patrol, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Montgomery Fire Department, North Montgomery Fireboat and Conroe Fire Boat.

Just after 7 p.m., dive teams recovered the man’s body from about 35 feet of water. Deputies said this is the first drowning reported on Lake Conroe in 2025.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
