Quick take
ROSENBERG — Fulshear’s football team dismissed another perceived district title contender as a non-threat Thursday evening.
The No. 5 state-ranked Chargers added Magnolia West to its list of District 10-5A Division I triumphs, romping the Mustangs 53-14 at Traylor Stadium.
Fulshear is 7-0 overall, 5-0 in district play, and has conquered the upper echelon of the district, record-wise, in Magnolia, Angleton and now Magnolia West by an average of 32 points per game.
The Chargers’ remaining opponents — Kempner, Manvel and Foster — had a combined record of 4-15 entering this week.
Magnolia West fell to 4-3 overall, 3-2 in district.
Fulshear is oh-so-close to its first outright district championship and its second district title in a row.
“I’m still kind of shocked,” Fulshear coach Nick Codutti said. “I still look at it and I don’t know how we’re winning like this. These kids have bought into our culture here. They don’t listen to the hype. They just go out, play football and enjoy themselves.
“These are really good football teams we’re playing, and our kids just do not care who they are. That’s what makes it kind of fun.”
Fulshear authored yet another explosive start, jumping out to a 24-7 lead after the first quarter on 202 total yards of offense.
The Chargers outgained the Mustangs 428-223 in total yards. They scored touchdowns on six of their first seven drives, induced three takeaways and compiled five sacks for minus-31 yards.
Fulshear blistered a Magnolia West defense that entered the game allowing a stingy 16.3 points per game.
“The coaches put together a good game-plan and they don’t put any pressure on us,” said senior quarterback Deuce Barrington, who threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. “We just go out there and do what we do every day in practice.”
Highlights
Fulshear senior running back Davion Godley had two touchdowns on runs of 52 and 11 yards, respectively, within the game’s first six minutes. He had 102 rushing yards on seven carries in the first quarter.
The Chargers sandwiched a Beau Chumley 7-yard scoring catch for Magnolia West with the two Godley scores and two receiving touchdowns of 9 and 29 yards, respectively, from junior Brayden Kennedy.
The second half was more methodical for Fulshear. Barrington had a 2-yard run on a keeper around end and Zane Smith added a 6-yard run, all in the third quarter’s final 2:54.
Magnolia West scored its final touchdown on a Terry Daniels 29-yard run 53 seconds into the fourth quarter. Tate Struble added a 29-yard catch for Fulshear with 5:11 left to cap the scoring.

Fulshear is a game ahead of Magnolia, which is 4-1 in district play heading into its game against Kempner on Friday. The Chargers took down Magnolia 46-21 on Sept. 9.
Quotable
“We stay grounded,” Barrington said of the Chargers. “This is a brotherhood and we love each other. We just keep on getting better and are always ready to work, every day, each day.”
