Here’s what to know about the 2024 Texas Custom Knife Show:

How did the show start?
The event is hosted by co-producers Mike Thomas and Jacob Sewell, from Conroe, a former contestant on “Forged in Fire.”
Sewell also owns the custom-knife business Bravehawk Forge.
The Conroe show is in its seventh year and inspired by Thomas’ late friend Guy Harris from The Woodlands.
Harris mentioned to Thomas that there were many participants who had been on “Forged in Fire” living in the north Houston area. He suggested an event where they could get together and showcase their passion for blade making to the community. Harris won his episode on the show.
The first Texas Custom Knife Show was in 2018 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
“We have always tried to give local fans of the show a real taste of what the TV show is like, but also what the art of bladesmithing is really about. The Texas Custom Knife Show is about bringing the thrill of the show and the amazing craftsmanship of bladesmithing to our hometown folks,” Sewell said.
What is there to see?
The live “Forged in Fire” style bladesmithing competition is the main event during the show. Several “Forged in Fire” alumni and challengers will compete in a timed knife build with blade judging by the “Forged In Fire” judge.
The event also features custom knife vendors, hands-on activities, the opportunity to make your own knife, a blade-chop competition, a parade of blades, music and food trucks.
Sherry Chaney Morgan, director of Visit Conroe, said last year’s event in November 2023 saw 25,000 visitors throughout the weekend. In September, the show was awarded $20,000 in marketing grants from the city of Conroe up from the $7,500 received the previous year.
Who is Doug Marcaida?
Marcaida is a martial arts and weapons specialist and former U.S. Air Force detail. He also a judge on The History Channel Series “Forged in Fire.” His catchphrase is “This Blade Will Keal!” He is making his third return to the Conroe show.
A new season of “Forged in Fire” launched earlier this month.
“This is a true celebration and exhibition of their beautiful works, demonstrations and the community of bladesmithing,” said Marcaida of the Conroe show. “The Texas Custom Knife Show is a real gathering of featured bladesmiths.”
Because of his affinity for the Conroe area, Marcaida has also chosen Conroe as the site of his new event taking him back to his roots as a martial arts expert. This weekend he hosts the first Doug Marcaida Local Heroes Martial Arts Festival at the Lone Star Convention Center.
