The members of Lake Conroe Centennial Lions Club welcomed Brenda Wellmeyer as guest speaker at their October general meeting.

Brenda is with an organization called Dolly Mamas. She explained that Dolly Mamas is a group of ladies who are committed to trying to ease some of the pain of child abuse.  Through working hands and loving hearts, their mission is to deliver dolls and handcrafted clothes to sexually abused girls to help give back a part of their stolen childhood.

This doll and a tote bag full of doll clothes and doll accessories is given to the girl immediately following her forensic interview and exam in hopes that for a few brief moments she can put aside the trauma she has experienced and be given back her childhood, a childhood that was stolen from her at far too young an age.  Brenda showed us a few dressed dolls and the beautiful clothes and accessories that are included in the tote bags. Gorgeous!!
Brenda went on to explain that since its beginning in 2008, Dolly Mamas has donated well over 1,000 dolls along with accessories.  Working with Children’s Safe Harbor, the dolls are of varying ethnic groups, and all are either equipped with undergarments or diapers.  And all clothes are made loving by hand by the Dolly Mamas.

Dolly Mamas are always looking for volunteers and you don’t have to be an expert seamstress or knitter to help.  No matter what your sewing or knitting skill level is or isn’t, your help is needed.  In addition, this organization supplies everything you need, from fabric to yarn and all necessary supplies to make completed garments including Velcro and elastic.

You can also help by donating fabric, yarn or doll accessories.

Thank you, Brenda, for educating us about this wonderful organization that is affiliated with the Golden Needles Quilt Guild which is a 501c3 organization.

All contributions to Dolly Mamas are tax deductible. For more information contact Kathleen Gidney at 936-697-1567 or Kathleen@tpl-global.com.
